Name:[/u] Oran
Age:[/u] 26
Gender:[/u] Male
Nation:[/u] Northern Water Tribe
Bender?:[/u] No
Appearance:[/u] Pale blue eyes, hazy as sky on the open sea and squinted against the sun, make Oran appear to have an old man’s failing vision. A gruff surprise would come to the bandit who would assume so, however, for Oran’s sight is as strong as any young buck’s and his muscles are like a whaleshark’s. He has the sturdy, overall square appearance of an Earthbender though his is not of their kin. Oran makes an impressive image from head to foot; his sleek thick eyebrows press towards his hawkish nose, and his wide, flat chin is set beneath hollowed cheeks. He does his best to find the time to keep the short beard hanging from his chin neatly trimmed, revealing his leathery skin to be the natural, cream-touched-chocolate of his tribe. The wrinkles in his face are attained from navigating in the glaring sun and his grimace is formed by the winds. He stands a head above most men at seven feet in height, though this is difficult to perceive in its entirety. He hunches low indoors and stands an unusually lengthy distance from anyone he’s talking to. Oran does not keep his russet mane clipped near to his head. Instead, he ties it from his face in a loose tail, using an ancient length of reindeer leather stamped with a symbol of the Water Tribes. The tips of his hair hang just between his shoulder blades, adding to his boxy and unyielding appearance. Though Oran is burly, his every step is a display of discipline and experience. Fat would keep cold from his bones, but the herder knows well the use of muscle in rounding up unruly reindeer. He allows no flab to creep onto his figure, and rigorous exercises keep him in shape during the grazing months. Though many hooves have bruised his chest over the years he is lucky and tends to no scars. Oran is a titan in stature, his handsomeness of a noble and stalwart nature.
Oran’s clothing often holds a light film of glittering sea-salt and the sticky, homey scent of reindeer. A muted luster of dust has ingrained itself into the black, tough boots pulled up to his mid-calf. His clothes, all of which are Water Tribe navy in hue, vary depending on where he is living at the time and what he requires to keep warm. When at home among the freezing ice he wears a long, undecorated parka and thick, wolf-fur-trimmed pants, along with gloves and ice-gripping boots lined well to keep out cold. For his springs and summers in the Earth Kingdom he wears a lighter outfit, stowing away his winter apparel. Covering his thin long-sleeved shirt is a brown vest made from platypusbear fur. He wears thick blue trousers, for the northern Earth Kingdom has its own arctic winds, but casts off his gloves and parka. He wears no jewelry and sports no piercings – if caught on an antler, he knows such niceties would be deadly.
As far as weaponry in concerned Oran carries only a knife in his satchel for notching reindeer antlers. Its blade is metal, six inches in length, and the hilt is four, crafted from whalebone. A tiny insignia of a running reindeer is its sole adornment, carved into the base of the shaft. He has no need for other forms of protection and does not have any sort of prowess with the knife as a weapon, for his strength can carry him through most fights and (as a good merchant) he avoids conflict.
Personality:[/u] Oran is hidebound. Oran is concise. Oran tells the honest truth whatever it may be, and as one who doesn’t believe in excuses (a loosely defined term), he makes it a point to never get himself in a situation where he would need to use one. This makes Oran an excellent businessman, if also difficult to deal with in social situations. Due to Oran’s temperamental-and somewhat frightening-way of expressing himself, the sons of farmers preparing to take up their family’s work usually must be encouraged before they will approach him. Once they enter into negotiations for this bull or this cow with such-and-such lineage, however, they find that Oran excels at listening and piecing together just the kind of creature that a customer needs. It is his appearance that gives him most of his intimidating aura, though his staunchness adds some. He is remotely congenial only when he’s not working, and he rarely does anything but work. When pressed into social situations Oran often becomes agitated and gruff, especially around females with two legs and no hooves. However, when he is faced with the affections of a small child Oran becomes almost agreeable–tolerant, at least, and even pleased. Though he rarely shows amusement in anything not related to reindeer or business deals, he’s been known to give a hearty laugh after a child’s prodding. And though it may thereafter be followed by a roar for privacy, he’s more likely than not already hoisting little girls and boys on the backs of his most docile beasts, delighting in their giggles and foal-like jollity.
Profession and History (since his history is his profession, and vice versa.):[/u]
Oran transports reindeer to a number of towns on the coast in the mountainous region of the northern Earth Kingdom, where a need for strong, steady, and tamable beast of burden first sparked trade between the northeastern coast and the Northern Water Tribe hundreds of years ago. Oran took this profession upon the death of his father, and all of his early life was spent learning the reindeer trade. Oran, as the eldest, most responsible, of his four siblings (one brother, three sisters), grew into his formidable character under his father’s tutelage. The two would wrestle frequently to build up Oran’s strength, and ever since his sixteenth year, Oran would accompany his father to the Earth Kingdom. The journey across the water now takes over a month. Oran is often away from his home in the Northern Water Tribe for spring and summer, when he must bring strong new studs to Hago and Cheng (two herders located in the Earth Kingdom), aid in foaling among the coastal town and mountain villages, and tend to reindeer that fall ill in the summer environment. He leaves behind his brother, Shou, and sister-in-law, Riko, to care after the herds in the north. He then travels to each of the coastline towns and then into the more numerous valley villages, sometimes making special trips to care after reindeer in private homesteads. He is in the process of training a boy apprentice in the village Each Kingdom village of Daichi, and when he is in the Earth Kingdom it is not rare for him to receive letters by hawk from the two other fully trained herders, Hago and Cheng, asking for his advice. Both Hago and Cheng have been trained by Oran’s father in the Earth Kingdom and have never set foot on Water Tribe ice. They are in charge of caring for the reindeer of the northeastern coast in the fall and winter, when the climate becomes more familiar to the reindeer and fewer diseases arise. They also run small breeding operations, but their reindeer are not nearly as strong as those in the Northern Water Tribe and are generally less healthy due to dietary changes. The war has made Oran’s trade considerably more dangerous. The herder never knows if he will encounter Fire Nation troops in one of the villages he must visit, or if he will even be able to make it safely across the sea. Even so, his sense of duty keeps him bent on returning to the Earth Kingdom, and his lack of intimate relation in the Northern Water Tribe makes his reindeer top priority.
