Welcome to Course Three, Creating a Profile!
When joining a role play, the first thing you post will be your character’s profile. This is like a summary of your character and gives everyone a preview of what your character’s role will be. A profile is required in order to join most RPs.
We will cover the basic outline of a profile. Different RPs will have different preset profile outlines that they would like you to fill out. Ours is:
Name:
Age:
Gender:
Nation:
Bender?:
Appearance:
Personality:
History:
In this course, we will first cover Name, Age, Gender, Nation, and whether or not your character is bender.
Name: Avatar is set in an Asian-influenced world. This means that names like Katie, Jessica, Robin, Joy, Dan, and Jacob are not good names for your OC. Here are some links to good sites that will give you ideas for appropriate Asian-sounding names:

Age: The most common age range for RP characters is 13-18 years. Often these characters do not act their age, have abilities far beyond a reasonable skill level, have no parental guidance, have traveled around the globe twice, and even if they’re 16 and in the Water Tribe, marriage never is mentioned. It’s okay to have a character who is a teenager, but their abilites, background, attitude, and experience must reflect that. Also, having an age outside of that range is often seen as a signal to other RPers that the character is not a Mary Sue.
Gender: Fairly straightforward. ^.^
Nation: Keep in mind how you want your character to look, act, and think. A male from the Northern Water Tribe will be sexist, a girl from Kyoshi Island will be strong. A Fire Nation soldier will have been taught to hate the Earth Kingdom, a Water Tribe warrior will have been taught to distrust the Firebenders. Unless specifically stated otherwise in the RP rules, your character cannot be an Air Nomad or a cross between two nations. Aang is the last airbender. Crosses have not happened in the show. Also, it’s courteous to keep the balance in an RP. If there are two Earthbenders, one Waterbender, and twelve Firebenders, thank about joining the Waterbender or the Earthbenders instead of adding another Firebender.
Bender?: Your character cannot bend more than one element. If there is a golden rule in Avatar, this is it. Until a cross-bender pops into the show, RP characters that bend more than one element will be frowned upon and shunned in the RP community. The Avatar is the only one who can bend more than one element. Also, match your character’s element to their nation. Waterbenders come from the Water Tribes, Earthbenders come from the Earth Kingdom, and Firebenders come from the Fire Nation. It’s also not required, but I would encourage you to not make up your own kind of bending. Shadow/light/cloud/rainbow/blood/sky/heart/pink-bending is considered extremely Sueish and is very hard to justify in a character, especially if you’re just starting out. Stick to the basics the show has given.
… Congratulations! You’ve made it to the interactive portion of our tutorial!
Copy and paste the following form. Fill it out with the guidance above and post it in the thread that has your name on it. All three of the tutors (Godhunter, Bard Child, and I) will reply and give you concrit as needed.
Name:
Age:
Gender:
Nation:
Bender?:
This is as far as we’ll go. I expect that this will take a relatively short amount of time, and once this half has been worked out we’ll get started on the rest. The other tutors may now post if they have anything to add.
I’m looking forward to getting to know all about your new characters!
