That's an awesome character analysis SelfPossessed. I don't think I've read such a good one in awhile actually.

I'm quite proud of it myself. *puffs up in pride* I have it posted in my FFN profile as well under the rant section. I'm a big Toph fan so an analysis is only natural. That and her character is far easier to understand than the rest as there hasn't been much development on her so far. It's why I'm confused when people make such strange assumptions about her character...I found her to be a rather simple character so far. Hopefully my post will be helpful for people.

SelfPosessed, I couldn't have said it better myself. Toph has a lot of potential, there's no doubt about that. But she's already become stale. Her actions are rather predictable now, and while they've tried to give her character depth(Tales of Ba Sing Se is a good example) there attempts have been rather sparse. I think they need another Toph centered episode, one that takes full advantage of the character, to bring her up to snuff. The Blind Bandit was an amazing episode. The writers just need to look at that if they need to remember what to do.

Please, do bear with me as I explain my winding analysis of her character. I see Toph more as a someone who had her freedom stripped from her and is thus fiercely independent, resenting her parent's treatment of her. She hates being coddled and she hates people pitying her because of her blindness. She wants people to see her for more than a blind little girl and is thus looking for recognition of her abilities from others (Earth Rumble, the gang, etc.). Her backtalking appears to be more from her Earth Rumble experiences more than anything else. There, she felt independent. There, she felt she could break free from her chains. And then she met Aang and co, where she learned about their freedom of flying in the skies, going where they wanted to go, not having to live in a society restricted by rules and regulations. From there, she learned of a new form of freedom beyond what she already had and strove towards it, experiencing more of life itself. However, despite her bravado, I think Toph is insecure when it comes to relationships. She has lived under a rock for the majority of her childhood life. She didn't have any friends her age to interact with. Her parents trained her in propriety and decorum, forcing her to abide by society's customs when it came to socializing. In this manner, one was to mask their true intentions behind a smile and a silver tongue rather than truly enjoying a relationship with another. Through her experiences in the Earth Rumble tournaments, she learned how to smacktalk, degrading her opponents with insults and talking with her earthbending. She really lacked the experience of simply socializing among friends and just enjoying another's company. For this reason, she butted heads with Katara and Aang early on after joining the group before gradually learning to understand this new form of interaction. She treasures her new friends dearly, finally having found a sense of freedom amongst people who liked her for who she was, appreciated what she had to offer to them, and were willing to help her out of friendship rather than pity. Overall, Toph is a great character, although as of now she's still underdeveloped. Throughout the second season of the series, Toph is used more as a convenient plot device and a fanboy magnet (it worked on me!) rather than a truly deep member of the gang. She has her quips here and there, which although entertaining, are not enough to make up for her lack of depth when compared to the other members of the gang. I believe this has more to do with a shorter screentime due to her late introduction as well as well as the numerous episodes that were dedicated to the twisting and complex plot of Ba Sing Se. As a big Toph fanboy, I hope to see this change in season 3. More Toph can only be a good thing. Nice job karma I would like to add tthat I think toph has come along way from when she jionhed her attoude seems to be far more balacned and willing to let people in so to speak. She seems to have actually be in better spirts to.

She is cute, badass, powerful, funny, and smart. My favorite character in the show. She rules!
And i would love to watch a fight between her and Azula.

But wouldn't Azula have the advantage?

Why you think Azula would have the advantage? In my opinion, Azula and Toph are equals. Both of them are the greatest fire/earth benders in the world. A fight between only the two of them(without any interruption) would be awesome. I hope we can see that in Book 3.
