I was wondering if he will help Aang find his teacher considering he can locate and sense strings between people. Ooh, good theory! He'd be able to find the teacher most suited to Aang's needs. *hopes for Iroh*

Honestly i think here's there to help bolster Aang's connection to the spirit realm, you know considers Aang usually gets there by accident and doesn't know what the heck to do there.

I like Guru, he was interesting and kinda funny. Maybe, like what somebody said, he was supposed to assist Aang in finding a firebender teacher. He could also give Aang some more insight on something to do with the war, possibly.

Just to throw it out there, what if he is a firebender? Wouldn't that be crazy!?

Hmm, maybe as well as the four bending disciplines teachers, Aang needs a spirit world teacher to tell him how to go straight into the spirit world and stuff - and the guru had that kind of knolwedge. Once he knows how to access the spirit world afterall, he can learn bending from past avatars and stuff. I visited Ellora, and saw a fantastic temple, and learnt that the entire thing had been carved out of a single massive rock, First off - That's awesome. The wonders of Anicent Engineering. No one would ever attempt that today.. but wow. That is amazing. Absolutely beautiful. There is a pretty interesting documentary on some of them, here on google videos: video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8931191297840928556

If your entire culture was under attack and you knew you would be slaughtered, what would you do with your children? Maybe give them up in a hope they could live a better and full life, to a kingdoim like the Earth Kingdom, but wait, if bending is genetic than if you trained to be a bender you would most likely learn your origin. Hmm, coul Guru be an Airbender who was removed from his family so that he may live, then learned who he was and returned to his mother's (or grandmothers) temple?

There is no evidence bending is genetic - it could simply be a case of each nation only teaches one of the disciplines...
To answer your question, it depends on the situation - sometimes your children's fate might be worse if they live and are captured - for example, some Indian women used to self-immolate themselves rather than be violated or forcibly converted by Muslim invaders after their husbands died in battle.

If I am an Airbender and I trust a family deep in the Earth Kingdom, than I may ask them to care for my child while I battle our common foe. That way my child is relatively safe compared to if I just waited for the the Fire Nation to come knocking at my door. Also if bending is not genetic, I think it would be more common to have people learn multiple techniques. We can learn multiple forms of Martial Arts. I believe there has to be some genetic control. In normal people genetics control a large portion of your personality and how you behave regardless of your upbringing. While your behavior may change you are always genetically disposed to certain traits.
Definition for Self Immolate: Burn ones self. Basically, I'd rather burn than be subjected to what you are going to do for me.

Yup, burn oneself to death. It is also a form of extreame non-violent protest sometimes used by Hindu, Buddhist and Jain monks - like during Vietnam when Buddhist monks burnt themselves in the middle of roads. I think some of Gandhi's movement might have done it too.

Bending is both spiritual and genetic. Thus I suppose an earth or fire nation citizen with airbending ancestors and the spiritual strength to use it would be an airbender. Why every has their hearts set on making Pathik an airbender is beyond me. Why can't he just be the first spiritual nonbender, or does that scare people.
