(The original name of this thread is "Life Expectancy in Avatar + Avatar Kyoshi's Native Element + Kyoshi Island thread" but all of that wouldn't fit in the subject line here. I originally posted this thread here: www.tv.com/avatar-the-last-airbender/show/28841/forums.html
I'm reposting it here because it has some points of interest in it).
Wow, that's a mouthfull, but this thread will cover those things, basically.
Anyway, as I figured out from making my post in the timeline thread, Avatar Kyoshi was born 288 years before Aang.
We know that there is a time period of about a week or two between Avatars.
We know that some people in the avatar world can live a very long life. King Bumi, for example, is over 100 years old, and he's still very healthy and very strong. On top of that, he's not an avatar. I've often wondered if benders live longer than non-benders, and if perhaps avatars live even longer than that. Of course, everyone, bender or not, avatar or not, could have the same life expectancy, or maybe it depends on what nation you were born into, etc.
Anyway, let's assume that each Avatar has a life of at least 100 years. This would mean that Kyoshi was an earthbender. She could have lived for well over 100 years before dying. This would also have given Avatar Roku, a firebender, a significantly long life before dying and Avatar Aang being born.
If we say that, for whatever reason, Kyoshi (or the avatar after her) died at a young age, she could very well have been a water bender. She dies young, and then an earthbender avatar is born, OR, she dies old, and an earthbender avatar is born yet for some reason dies young.
If we really want to stretch it, we could say that Kyoshi was even an airbender, died young (or old) and then the two between her and Roku died at a fairly young age. (We know that Roku lived to a fairly old age, because he looks pretty old whenever they show him, but Kyoshi has always looked kind of young, although they could have made her statues when she was young).
We know that Kyoshi was born on the island presently known as Kyoshi Island. Kyoshi island, however, doesn't seem to belong to any definate nation that we can tell, just by looking at the way people live. I read a theory a while back that said that Kyoshi Island perhaps once belonged to the air nomads, before being annexed by the earth kingdom. This theory seems reasonable because the lifestyle of the people on Kyoshi seems to be a mix of the earth kingdom and air nomad lifestyles.
So, assuming that my first thought is correct, and the life expectancy is pretty long, and if avatars can live longer, even if only slightly, than other people, Kyoshi being an earthbender makes a lot of sense. If we stretch it as I said before and say that she was an airbender, it would also make some sense. Water and fire, however, don't seem to fit. Water because of the location, and fire because we were already stretching it far enough for the possibility for her to be an airbender, a firebending avatar would have been a whole other generation back, plus as with water, the location doesn't really fit in. (Don't forget, the order of the cycle = air, water, earth, fire).
So, any more ideas or comments on the subject?
