That is a common thought for a person that doesn't have a twin or is directly related to twins, nymphadora. I find, as a mother of twins, that I am very careful of not comparing one another or allowing anything beyond friendly competition among the two.
When you have a twin or parenting a set of twins, you are very aware that they are two different people and deserve to be treated as such. It seems more acute when you see others treating them as if they are were same.
A prime example would be school. I requested my kids to be in the same class. The teacher they have has a daily system to grade the kids on behavior (not just my kids, but the entire class). It's based on a 1-3 grade- 1 being best behavior, 2 being acceptable and 3 a note goes home for poor behavior.
My daughter was coming home with nothing but 1's while my son takes a while longer to adapt to new surroundings. He had come home with a 3 one day for pinching a girl for talking while the teacher was speaking. Mind you, this is only Kindergarten and yeah, after asking the girl to be quiet, she kept going and he got mad at her. When I spoke to teacher on the phone about this, she thought she was offering me a backward compliment by saying something along the lines of "I know it's not his upbringing. Gianna never would do something like this."
That blew my mind. Of course it has nothing to do with upbringing- it's personalities. I told the teacher straight up, "You're comparing apples to oranges. Yeah they're family to each other, but they're two different people. You have no business commenting on how I am raising them. You just stick to teaching them- as Paul and Gianna."
That night I made my son write an apology note to the little girl he pinched and to the teacher for disrupting the classroom.
When you're a twin or have twins, you find yourself very defensive of making sure everyone else knows they are different people. It's just a natural reaction.

Me and my sister are identical twins!! =] it's kind of funny though because one doctor said we were ferternal, and another said we're identical. Our mom went with the doctor she liked better! Some ppl in school don't know which one is which so when they pass back papers they'll show me a paper and ask is this you? and I'm like yea, thanks. lol If you ever wanted to know for sure, all it takes is a simple blood test. Identical twins will be 98% or better DNA match to one another. Until I found out my twins gender, there was speculation that my twins may have been identical. The main factor was only one placenta was seen on previous sonograms. When we found out I was having a girl and a boy, it just meant that both placentas were so close to one another, they grew together. And when I delivered them, they most certainly did grow together. That's funny Moonmask. Most parents of multiples I speak to (that have fraternal girl/boy twins) always tell me their first born is the domineering child. You're the first person I have spoken to as family member of identical twins. I guess birth order doesn't make a difference in this case... I suppose it's more a matter of 'survival of the fittest'. Or should I say, "survival of the more stronger willed"? lol Yea, we've always asked for a DNA test but have yet to get one! lol I'm pretty sure we're identical though. Even I can't tell us apart in our baby pictures. We were inseperable when we were babies, and even now. Well whatever we may be, she'll always be my best friend. *aww, how sweet! lol*

I think that is THE best part of having a twin. I look at my kids and think "Wow! I have siblings, but nothing compares to this." There is no doubt that twins- identical or fraternal share a bond unlike any other kind of siblings. You guys truly know, feel and experience everything the other does and it's just an amazing phenomenon- one that truly should be envied from the perspective of an outsider. Aside from the fact they are my children, I have to say, watching them grow, develop and interact with each other has been the most joyful experience in my lifetime. It's ranged from insane to sweet, down right strange to loving and at times, frustrating to wondrous. You truly are blessed to have that bind in your life.

I'm not a twin.
Back before I cut my hair short, though, everyone thought my best friend & I were! They would always ask us,"Are you twins?" & we were like,"No!" LOL.
We don't even look that alike aside from then our hair was the same length & color. I mean my best friend has blue eyes, and I have brown eyes. She's totally stick thin, and I'm not. lol.

I could've sworn back in the days of good ol' Nick Jr., during the transition from Nick Jr. to regular Nickelodeon, there was the commercial of random little kids saying goodbye and there was a girl in there that looked like me.

Are you suggesting your parents gave your twin away? OMG.. what if you're the one that was given away? That would be awful. On the flip side... You post reminded me of something my daughter asked of me in Wal-Mart one day. She asked if we could get rid of her twin brother and get a puppy instead. I wanted to laugh so bad.. but it would have been so wrong. We've opted to keep my son. He's a good brother... and a good little boy.

Sadly, I don't have a twin. When I was little I wished I had one, but that was probably only because my sister is so much older than me and I wanted to have a buddy to play with all the time. That would have been terrifying though if there were two Ardor's scurrying around... O.o
Chibi Chan's post also reminded me of something... when I was I think eight years old, I was at one of my neighborhood friend's house and his mom came out into the living room where we were playing with a picture frame and showed me a picture of his grandma, when she was about eight years old too, and jeez.... we looked exactly alike... same haircut, same color hair, eyes, everything (although, she was wearing a dress in the picture. I would have died if I had to wear a dress back then...). I met her once, and she was also shocked at the resemblance. lol

Eeeek! I have a 9½ year old Chocolate lab. I think a puppy (or two) would just do the poor thing in. And seriously, when she kicks it- I don't know if I would have it in my heart to get another dog- she's been that great.
My kids are 6 years old now.. and with the dog being almost 10- she's is going to die at a tender age for the kids. Any way you look at it, it's going to suck when we get to that point.
I've always wanted peacocks... twin peacocks, anyone?
