It's hard to believe that it's been this long, but tomorrow marks the 10th anniversary for Avatar: The Last Airbender's premiere date! I know this place has grown cold and dusty, but for those returning for old memories' sake, do you have anything planned to celebrate? Dare you be one of the lucky ones going to the art gallery in California to meet Bryke and the many other artist/writer contributors on March 7th? Or maybe just play a dvd marathon? Make Avatar-themed snacks?
Me, I'm going with the dvd marathon. Book 1: Water has always been my favorite, and it'll be fun to see the old episodes again. A lot has changed over these 10 years, but I'll always remember the early years fondly. Even the ship-wars and the Avatar Withdrawl Syndrome. It inspired some great fanart.
It was exciting, seeing so many different people come around to this amazing new show. Seeing the show through the eyes of old anime and Kung Fu fans, and young fans confused as they learned that Zuko and Iroh were not your typical cartoon villains. All of the knowledgeable people who elatedly pointed out what this part of the episode was based on, or what culture this person's outfit came from, and what this writing said. All of the fansites and fanlistings that popped up in the following months and years; some amazing, some as simple as 'I love this show! Here's a list of why I like these characters, and some pictures that I found!' I still remember the fansite to Admiral Zhao, it had such a pretty layout. It wasn't online for very long though. In fact, it's kinda sad to think about how many Avatar sites don't exist any more. How many layouts and essays, art and fics have fallen into the aether, as if they never happened. It's this reason that keeps Distant Horizon going, even though I haven't had a real content update in years. Proof of existence.
...Anyway! What was your favorite part of the fandom and/or show? Any memory lanes you'd like to stroll down and share?
