I agree, I was a little upset when I thought they were going to answer one of the biggest questions from ATLA casually in the first couple of minutes. I really hope, they don't just drop the issue though. I just hope that it is presented in a way that doesn't make it seem out of place in the series. I will always at heart have wished they would have done a concluding season dealing with the aftermath of the war... ;; even just a mini one to answer the mystery of what happened to Ursa, the founding of Republic City, and other things. The war with the Fire Nation didn't just end and everyone agree to get along so easily, you know? But regardless, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this series. I think it has a lot of potential. edit: I think it would be kind of cool if they did a "flashback" episode to let us see what actually happened and not just let us "hear" the story, if that makes sense. I don't know if or where that would fit in the storyline, but I think it would give a nice sense of closure - at least for me - in regards to that storyline, and give it from the perspectives of the old characters. avatar.wikia.com/wiki/The_Promise_Part_1

Steve Blum will always be Spike Spiegel to me, but yeah, there's a lot of great talent in this show! Apparently Mindy Sterling is playing Chief Bei Fong as well, which just seems perfect. <3 I can't wait to see who else shows up this season. And who Dante Basco will be playing. His character is still being kept under wraps, yeah?
I thought it was hilarious that the Zuko's Mom question was asked so early in the episode, it really is the #1 burning question of the series. xD I really like Katara's answer-intro though, because instead of it being a simple "she was hiding at ____," it sounds more like it was an adventure to find her, which hopefully will be developed later as an OVA or something. When the Promise comics were first coming around, I figured it would be answered in there, but I think it would be better answered in animation. But since Korra is apparently such a tight show, it's hard to tell if there will even be enough free space to fit it in there. But a flashback episode, that would be really amazing. I'd probably cry through the whole thing, and not hear a single word, but it would be amazing.

I'm fairly certain it'll be answered in Korra, seeing as ATLA ended with Zuko asking where his mom was and The Promise picked up right there and then completely ran off to what happened a year later, seemingly sidestepping the issue. @muso: What's an OVA? I think I'd have to take a couple days off of work/school to recover if there was a flashback episode lol. Just hearing that Aang, Sokka, etc...were dead in this episode took me a couple days to get over .

I agree it would be good to see a flashback episode. Maybe Korra could encounter some situation that brought about talk of the past, and they could incorporate some flashbacks to the time after the war. Although I do agree that this series has a lot of potential, and I believe that I would enjoy it even without having saw ATLA.

It stands for Original Video Animation. Specifically, it's a movie designed for a direct-to-video (or DVD/BluRay now I guess) release...not for TV or theatres.

Yeah, like Nandi said. I'm not sure if the Super-Deformed cartoon shorts like School Time Shipping and Bending Battle also count as OVAs (though maybe, since they were on the Book 2 boxset), but something in line with that. If there isn't enough room during Korra to answer the Zuko's Mom question properly, then it could just be its own separate release/mini-movie to fully answer it. Kind of like how Nick Magazine made some Avatar comics to fill in the gaps between the season 2 finale and where season 3 picked up. It's all canon, just not located in the main show.

Ohh, okay. Well in that case, I agree, I'd love it if they did something like that, and I'm sure it would be worth it for them as an investment considering how many people would want to see it. *fingers crossed*.

I was so beyond stoked when I heard that they had released the first two episodes of Legend of Korra. I have been waiting for so long to get some more Avatar goodness in my life, and let me say...it did not disappoint!
First off let me say that it was definitely good to see a familiar face again, seeing katara was a breath of fresh air. Also I absolutely love Korra's personality I can tell she is going to get into quite a bit of trouble, but on the other hand good to see how she can handle herself so well. Tenzin's children are absolutely adorable can't wait to see more from them.
It absolutely killed me when one of his daughters asked Katara what happened to Zuko's mom, I was so excited thinking that they were finally going to tell us what happened...and got shut down hardcore hahaha
In other words...LOVE THIS SHOW! I can't wait to see more.

Wow, I did NOT realize just how much I missed the avatar universe until watching these episodes. Seriously, when Katara mentioned how everyone from the first show had died I almost started tearing up. And I'm LOVING Korra as the new Avatar, she's perfect!
On another note, this may be the most beautifully animated thing I have ever seen.

I don't know what reminded me about it, but I got it in my head the other night, "Wasn't The Legend of Korra supposed to start soon?" Then while reading a webcomic, I saw in the comments on one page one person commending the author for throwing in a subtle, well-placed reference to Chief Bei Fong, and all of a sudden, "Wasn't LoK supposed to start soon?" changed to "By Celestia's mane, did I miss it?!" Needless to say, I went looking for it and imagine my happiness when I found out that while I did indeed miss the online premiere, the network premiere still has yet to come and that I can indeed watch it online.
And watch the first episode of the new series I did, and so far, I have to say wow. It's new, and yet the art feels familiar, and The Track Team does music like only they can, and the overall atmosphere feels like something only Bryke can pull off. For all that's changed, some things have quite thankfully remained the same.
I didn't much care for Korra as a four-year-old (fun fact, four-year-old Korra was voiced by a Cora. Was that planned? That seems planned to me.), but that didn't last long, and young adult Korra just clicked with me, I liked her right away. Good voice and I just had to laugh toward the end of the episode when she picked up all at once not only all three of Tenzin's children, but Tenzin himself, as well. I see situations where her great physical trength win the day on the horizon.
And on the subject of Tenzin and voices, my eyes bugged when I learned that it is none other than J. K. Simmons who voices him. I had to replay the last few seconds a few times to make sure I wasn't hearing things, and pausing the video during the credits confirmed that yes, Amon is voiced by none other than Steve Blum. This speaks volumes to me and bodes well. They're stepping their game up and getting seasoned actors and A-list voice talent. That can only help a show that's off to such a promising start.
I personally was a bit saddened to see that of the old crew (I still refuse to call them the gAang, even after these years), only Katara remains, but then, she's kind of the disconnect, isn't she? This isn't the story of Aang and and his friends, so there's no real reason there should be anyone from the original series left aside from the fact that the universe's own rules state that people can live for a few hundred years and remain lucid, healthy, and active the entire time (Avatar Kyoshi is supposed to have been around 400 years old when she died). In my opinion, since this is a new story set in the same universe as the next step of the story begun by the original, at most, we should see direct references to things from AtLA without going into so much detail the viewer may as well just go back and watch the original. Subtle reminders and echoes of the past are the name of the game.
And on the subject of disconnecting from AtLA, I pretty much did the same and I've little problem accepting the technology mosstly because a lot of what we're seeing are things the Fire Nation may well have begun work on had Ozai won the war. It'll be odd seeing automobiles and electricity and whatnot in the Avatar universe, sure, but it doesn't really feel out of place to me when I consider that the Mechanist and Teo could also have begun work on such things, and for all we know, this is the result of work they began after the war.
And as a side note, I just want to throw it out there that I think that poor phonograph merchant will suffer similar misfortunes to those suffered by that poor cabbage merchant from the original series. And that the guy living in the shrub in the park reminds me of the crazy guy from The Painted Lady.

Remember the part in this episode where Korra and Chief Bei Fong have that hilarious little "I'm watching you" exchange? Check out who modeled the gesture! XD
