Despite "The Chase"-esque animation style that others have touched on, this episode was pretty good. (Any word on whether or not the animation will look like this for any of the remaining three episodes?) I could just be favoring it because it's a nice shift away from fluffy episodes like Tales or Appa's Lost Days, but regardless, I was pleased with it.
Toph's VA sounded a little different than normal in some scenes. It almost sounded like her voice was cracking when she said: "It looks just like him" about Sokka's drawings of Appa. Similar speech patterns emerged periodically throughout the episode. Her ability to tell whether or not people were telling the truth was a really predictable, boring way to figure out that Jet was brainwashed, but I expected it, so I guess I wasn't too disappointed on that front.
Katara's history with Jet was pretty obvious in this episode. She was pretty scary when she was throwing those icicles at him. They were embedded in the stone wall behind him; think what they would have done to Jet had they hit him dead-on. And I'm glad they didn't go overboard with AK stuff and make Aang too jealous. The one little blurb was nicely done.
Zuko as the Blue Spirit versus the Dai Lee agent was kick-awesome. It was hard to figure out what happened, though, even with TiVo. As far as I could tell, Zuko set up some kind of fake Blue Spirit and hid in the shadows, then came from behind the Dai Lee guy and hostage-gripped him. But where did he get the second Blue Spirit mask? Maybe somebody who understood the scene a little better can englighten me?
The back-to-back scenes where Jet opened the door hoping to find Appa, and where Zuko found Appa as the Blue Spirit, were a nice touch. Zuko's scenes in general were well-crafted this week. The Iroh/Zuko dialogs were nice, and the stage is set for whatever type of spiritual crisis Zuko is going to have next week (or whenever the next episode comes on). The Blue Spirit mask hasn't been destroyed, just dropped into the water (it's symbolic of Zuko's rejection of his original goal of capturing the Avatar, but nonetheless, the Blue Spirit lives!) - we may see its return next season or even in the finale (could Zuko fight alongside Aang against the Dai Lee as the Blue Spirit?). The door is left wide open for Zuko to join Aang & Co., as well. His transition away from his obsession with his honor is nearing completion!
Why does the mention of Lake Laogai immediately trigger something in the brain that makes one lose his or her free will? Is it part of the brainwashing technique? Does only Long Feng's voice trigger this state, or can the Dai Lee do it too? Certainly not just anybody can do it, or Sokka's mention of Lake Laogai to Jet would have made his pupils go all huge as well.
Longshot speaks? I thought that somewhere Mike/Brian/somebody high in the ranks made an allusion to Longshot's muteness. Either it was a wild rumor that got out of hand, or it's another inconsistancy in the story. Either way, it's weird that he would speak. Assuming he is not mute, and that his speaking was not a miracle, why would he remain silent in all the episodes we have seen him in? Surely seeing Jet lying on the floor and fatally wounded (or close) would have brought out some strong emotions, but why stay quiet for such a long time? Jet once said that all the members of his band of Freedom Fighters had something taken away from them by the Fire Nation. Maybe Longshot lost his parents to them, too, and his means of grieving is silence? Hmmm...
The ending scene where Momo flies into the sky and Appa comes flying out of the sun and into Long Feng and the Dai Lee was cool, but I thought the ending was just a tad storybook-ish. The scene with the Dai Lee agents coming out of the earth to chase Aang & Co was a really cool idea, and it made it look like they were going to get captured, or at least have a big ol' brawl, but Appa takes care of two-thirds of the guys in one blow, and Aang and Toph come over and earthbend six more of them into the water that easily? Oh well. At least Appa is back! =D
I'll be satisfied whether or not Jet lives. If he makes it through, I hope they do a decent enough job with his character like they did in this episode. He could be a powerful ally against the Fire Nation somewhere along the line in Season 3. He already has the drive to fight against the FN and stop the war, and it seems that he's been cured of his whatever-it-takes, extremist attitude by our heroes. But if he dies, Long Feng just becomes a much more dangerous enemy in our eyes, and his defeat (assuming that the Dai Lee is eventually defeated) will be that much more satisfying in the finale. I don't think Longshot notching an arrow was to put Jet out of his misery, though. Interesting theory, but probably not valid.

*exalts* nice work! You really put a lot of thought in this one mentioning lake laogai does not trigger the hypnotic state of joo dee and jet, it was when you said :"the earthking has invited you to lake laogai" then the victim would reply:"I'm honored to accept his invitation" so long feng is probably the only one who knows this, or perhaps a few other di lee's but like I said before! nice work!

The fake Blue Spirit didn't have a mask on, it was some sort of bag of straw stiched together to look like the mask, crudley done though.
I think the deal with Long Shot is that he keeps quiet almost all of the time, but when he actualy speaks it is something meaningful and he easily gains the attention of others.

It was when Sokka said about bringing Jet's memories back,"Maybe Katara could kiss him, that should bring something back." Katara: Maybe you should kiss him,Sokka Sokka: Hey it was just an idea Aang: *looking a little bit ticked* A bad one... XDDD i loved that part!!!

Am sayin this... without Toph... The Aang Gang would have been owned. Toph was the battle winner in that big fight that ensued between the Dai Li and the Good Guys. Man she kicked Equus asinus everyone talks about JEt coming back and Kitaras healing powers.. but man Toph and hey lsitening to the lying thing and all.. man that so rocked.

The mask on the straw dummy of the Blue Spirit was a (humorously ill-constructed) fake one; it had messed-up teeth and two different-sized eyes. There are lots of infamous conspiracy theories IRL about various governments having mind-control slaves; they walk around and behave just like normal people, but the mind-control is activated by a certain phrase. In this episode, the phrase was "the Earth King has invited you to Lake Laogai." Not speaking or being hesitant to speak is also a fairly common reaction to trauma. Whatever happened between Longshot and the Fire Nation was evidently severe enough to cause this reaction.

Longshot and Jet are best firends to the point where they know what there thinking without having to say it out loud
the concept of : "Are you think what I'm think"
Still I can't get enough of this epiosde. I think that the moment I could say this is one of the top five avatar episode this season.

Does Jet die?? It seems to be the main question and the big, current controversy in what I like to call the 'Avatar World'. We as viewers try to discover what really happened to Jet, but when you look at it very deeply, you realize that no one can be completely sure, at least, not right now.
Jet was my all time favorite character. When he first appeared in 'Jet', I was immediately hooked, and when it ended, (sorry Katara fans) I found a little dislike for the latter waterbender.
When he reappeared in The Serpent's Pass, I became excited again, I was so ready to watch him grow up, (yes, I admitted to that fact) and I could not wait to see him in the following episodes, especially the cliffhanger. When he was arrested, I was devastated, perhaps it was meant to be that Jet was simply a filler character, but I still hoped that maybe he would come back.
He came back so soon, it kind of shocked me. But the episode was at it's best, between the controversy between Katara and Jet, the return of Smellerbee and Longshot, and the impression of Toph on the Freedom Fighters.
But when Long Feng's rock hit him, I knew that it was over. Everyone who is bent on Jet coming back is in denial. Toph's words implied it. Smellerbee's tears implied it. Longshot's arrow implied it. As for the whole 'Rough Rhinos' theory, it gives us a look into Jet's past. We heard Song's story about her father. Ursa disappearing on the same night as Fire Lord Azulon, (though this isn't a great example, as it may come back later). So many threads have been left open, but what will happen is unknown. This isn't some celebrity story that someone can make a rumor on. This is a cartoon, one that has touched me deeply, I know, but still. This is a story of artist-drawn figures, and the plot has already been made. Who knows? Jet's demise could have been planned since episode ten.
The point is, this episode was supposed to not only conspire thoughts about Jet, but other characters as well. Has Zuko given up chasing Aang? Has Iroh finally made his impression? Will Aang become more responsible? Will Katara become more forgiving?
Jet we know. In his last and final actions, Jet had been able to redeem himself, and show what type of a man that he could have been. So now, the questions are not what happened to Jet, but how the more important characters will benefit from this.
Don't mistake me, I miss Jet as much (if not more) than everyone else does.

Is Jet dead o.O??? And what's up with the Dai Lee's leaders instant hypnosis on Ju Dee and Jet. The Dai Li were pretty cool with their rock gloves and shoes though they did get owned by just Aang's Gang and Jet's Gang. I mean there professional warriors I think they should atleast stand more of a chance. I think Katara's healing is getting a little intense though, she can like fix Jet's mind @_@ And Toph's powers are pretty intense too. I mean she can feel lies o-o.
But I can't wait to see Zuko in the next episode. He's on his way to join the Aang Gang o.o

lol, so many Ju Dees. makes my head spin. Yes, the powers are getting pretty crazy, you would think only the avatar or something would do this, the way they call him practically all powerful. About the hypnosis, the phrase with the Earth King sets it off. I wonder if the ladies becoming Ju Dee went voluntarily or were breaking some rule or were kidnapped. Apparently, the hypnosis is pulled off by Long Feng only, as though it is coded to his voice only, not to anyone else's cuz the Dai Li must hypnotize them in some way to turn out like that. We see what happens if you get on the bad side of Katara (maybe she will do that to Sokka one day is he goes all annoying? ) We also see Toph and her eagerness to get out of Ba Sing Se (loved the part where she screams, "Lets break some rules!" then earthbends the side of the house to rubble.) Also, she was hilarious when Sokka tells her to come with him. Long Feng has an...unusual type of earthbending. We see him use direct moves that causes the earth to jab upwards into vital points, rather than causing the rocks to come up and then send them flying at his opponents. Makes him that much deadlier, except for Toph and Aang. If Toph also uses this technique, along with some of her own unique moves, and teaches it to Aang, he could be that much better in earthbending. We begin seeing cracks in Katara's emotional wall, and we see that Firebender temper come out again. We also see her sadness at the end as they fly on Appa, and that fluffy hug by the Gaang. We also see the destruction of Jet's home, by none other than the Colonel of the Rough Rhinos! what a surprise; if I were Jet, I would go and take him out personally before I worry about the rest of the Fire Nation, to put peace to my mind. Also, we see that Jet treasures the memory of him and Katara, due to all the flashbacks he has when Aang says the two words that sets him free: Freedom Fighter. Longshot finally talks! I get the impression that he is a person of little words, but glances and body language convey his meaning. Words are powerful, and I sense that he knows this, and speaks only when it is of utmost importance, such as Jet's possible fatal injury (first one we see in Avatar?) I loved Zuko's line of how he shoves the agent out of the way and calls him skinny there is some banter there, finally! Apparently, the Dai Li are bigshots, so the guy gets really angry and falls into the trap. Wonder how Zuko finds out about Lake Laogai? Does he make the Dai Li tell him where they are keeping Appa, or does he just force the Dai Li to show him where it is? Also, what did he do with the agent, bind and gag him? I didn't like the way the Dai Li could hang onto walls; sure your hands are made of rock, but does that really make you stick to the sides like that? Also, what made the Gaang so hopeful when Appa comes and bashes 2/3 of the men? we all saw how they took on the guys on the cliff. But I thought it was funny how Appa whoops Long Feng and spins him across the lake. The spiritual crisis is spinning now, thanks to Iroh's words about whether Zuko was living his life the way he wanted to, or the way others wanted him to. The mask falling into the lake tells me that he has given up a chapter of his life and is deciding to move on. Wonder if the spiritual crisis will be dealing with his past and stuff?

Wow, this episode was just....WOW! Aang: Woah, quite a temper on the little guy, isn't there? Toph: Wow. She's got a whole "Daredevil" thing goin' on there. Ya know what I mean, right? Zuko: You know, he could have tried to disguise his voice in his Blue Spirit persona. I mean, what if that Dai Li agent comes into the shop for tea? Zuko has an easily recognized voice, don't you think? Iroh: Well, it's about time! He finally hangs up the proverbs and gives his nephew a little strait-forward advice! As for how he found the base, need I remind you that Iroh was a general? He lay seige to Ba Sing Se for 600 days! He probably already knew about it! Long Shot: I'll never forget this part. My granny and I were watching, and the moment he started his little speech, she was all, "HE CAN TALK?!" Appa: OK, no doubt about it, Appa rules! When he grabbed Long Feng's leg in his teeth, I was going, "DO IT! BITE! BITE HARD!" I can just imagine what Appa was thinking at this point. "I consider myself an even-tempered bovine. It takes a LOT to get under my skin. Well, CONGRATULATIONS! You just won the solid-gold kewpie doll! And you have lousy taste in shoes."
