Why are they called that?
Wikipedia says it's a play on the words "naughty" and "nought" an English word meaning nothing or zero.
But the decade wasn't really all that naughty. The video game industry surpassed the porn industry in gross income.
A decade that should be deemed "naughty" should be either the 60's or 70's for bringing about a lot of cultural changes. Even the 80's and 90's too. This decade was just meh.

............Is that for the 2000's? When I was in school, everyone called it the Double O's. But it seems like there wasn't a great name for the decade that really stuck for everyone. And although there does seem to be a push for the Noughties/Aughties/whatever, I think it sounds kind of dumb, so it'll always be the Double O's to me.
I am curious what this decade's nickname will be though, or if for future decades they'll return to calling them the 20's, 30's, etc and so will overlap the mainstream conscience of those numbers referring to the 1900's. Although, since history obviously went through this for the 1890-1910 years, why didn't we just see what kind of slang they used for it back then, then upgrade it for modern use if necessary.

I call the 2000's the 2K's, but I think that's just something I picked up from Pop 2K on Sirius/XM radio.
I have no idea what to call the current decade.

2K was used a lot on the internet iirc
Like on Gaia online they had labeled their yearly stuff like 2k7 for 2007, 2k8 for 2008, etc.
But I dunno. I just call it the 2000's ("Two thousands")

I never thought about it meaning naughty. I thought it was just the naughties because naught means zero. I just call it the two thousands though. Naughties sounds forced.
As for this decade, I'd guess that people still call it the two thousands (or naughties) for a couple years. Then when it's 2013+, it'll be the teens. And when we look back in thirty years, they'll all sort of be glumped together.

Ahaha I saw this term used in a Rock Encyclopedia I bought for my dad, and I had no idea what it was referring to until I flipped through the contents and saw contemporary artists in that section; I thought it was something they made up. Whoops.
Personally I call last decade the two-thousands, but there doesn't seem to be anything standardized yet.
