So we all know that if Aang dies in the Avatar state (or any Avatar for that matter), the chain will be broken and the cycle will stop completely. No more Avatars. So the question is...WHY ?
When you are in the Avatar State you are manifesting the spirits of the thousands of Avatar before you, to me, that would mean you'd be a hell of a lot stronger (physically) so it would be harder to hurt you, but we all know what Azula did to Aang.
So, while in the Avatar State is it the Avatar Spirit and/or Soul that's actually present in a human manifestation and killing the Avatar while in the state actually kills the Avatars Spirit/Soul not allowing it to move on to its next body ?

So, while in the Avatar State is it the Avatar Spirit and/or Soul that's actually present in a human manifestation and killing the Avatar while in the state actually kills the Avatars Spirit/Soul not allowing it to move on to its next body ? I think that's because you would need supernatural means to harm Spirits, this is only true if you are fighting their spirit forms and they aren't fully manifested in the physical world. (Hei Bei for example) They can be hurt but you would need supernatural means to affect them in the Physical world. While this makes the job difficult for the one intending to harm the Spirit, consider also the fact that because the Spirit isn't fully manifested in the Physical world they can only interact with it in a very limited fashion. Example, Hei Bei could only affect the Physical world for a short time and only ever at night. He may have been able to affect the Physical world more strongly during those episodes that he did because the Solstice was drawing near. (Spirits powers and manifestations can be affected by cosmological factors as far as tropes concerning spirits are involved) Or you could confront them in the Spirit world, where most anything would be able to hurt them but where they are most powerful as well. So I wouldn't recommend it. And while the Avatar spirit fully manifested in the Avatar State is more powerful and thus harder to hurt what you have to consider is that the Spiritual world in the Avatar-verse have connections to the physical world as well. This rule was apparent with the Sea and Moon spirits when they both manifested in the physical world. And like all beings that fully exist in the physical world they become mortal and thus vulnerable to the perils of the mortal world. (Case in point Zhao killing the Moon spirit with fire) With all this in mind a Spirit fully manifesting in the Physical world would be more powerful than if it were merely manifesting half-in and half-out methinks. (Ex. the Sea Spirit apparently possessing Aang and using the Avatar spirits powers within him to take it's revenge on the Fire navy) So I think the Avatar state is the Avatar spirit fully manifesting through the Avatar's body as they channel the Spirit but as the Avatar Spirit is at it's most powerful fully manifested in the physical world, it is also at it's most vulnerable because it would be more vulnerable to the dangers and harms of the physical world. The Avatar in it's normal half-in and half-out state (non-avatar state) is less vulnerable and thus more likely to survive physical harm should any ever befall the current Avatar. Just my two cents.
