I tried doing the Punnett square, but I think I messed it up. (Geez, it's been too long.) But generally, that sounds right. 1:2 chance of being a bender. 1:4 chance of being a waterbender. And TECHNICALLY 1:8 chance of bending both.
But Aang had his genes simultaneously turned "on," how does he get all these recessive genes in the first place? In Avatar Aang's arc, the nations had not yet had interracial (for lack of a better term) relationships. Does that mean that every person has all eight genes?

Nice theories guys but I don't think anyone has the ability to bend two elements at the same time regardless of their genetics or their ancestry because we know that only the avatar has the ability to bend more than one element. Everyone else can only bend one element.
So I think there might be a chance that siblings in one family could be benders of differing elements if their parents were benders of differing nationalities, but their offspring would only be able to bend one element at a time.
And if international co-mingling would become a more distinct practice among modern families in the Avatar's world (especially when we consider the continued survival of the Airbenders) then what happens to the Avatar cycle? Would determining what nation the next Avatar would be born into be less predictable, if families of different nations become more increasingly homogenized?

Well, the genes would have to be present in the first place for them to be turned on. They don't just appear out of nowhere. If you go by my theory, then yes, all people born in the Avatarverse have the alleles for bending/non-bending. Nice theories guys but I don't think anyone has the ability to bend two elements at the same time regardless of their genetics or their ancestry because we know that only the avatar has the ability to bend more than one element. Everyone else can only bend one element. I don't think I really tried to imply that anyone could bend more than one element lol... There's probably some sort of spiritual element that goes along with the bending, but in biological terms of speaking that's how it is. It might be that if two dominant alleles for two different bending types are present, they cancel each other out and create a non-bender? It's all really speculation, and tbh, I doubt Mike and Bryan consulted their local geneticist on the nuances of bending. However, I do agree it's possible for siblings of a mixed family to bend different elements. edit: I'm just speaking from AP Biology though, so don't quote me as the end-all, be-all truth, by the way guys.

Indeed you didn't but that part of my message was meant more for Aura who actually implied that.... no offense meant. edit: I'm just speaking from AP Biology though, so don't quote me as the end-all, be-all truth, by the way guys. Hey no prob... it's all good. I'm enjoying the banter... :)

LOL, sorry if it seemed as if I meant that one would be able to bend two elements. And as for AP Biology...I never took it, but biology wasn't my forte. I fared well, but that was two, three years ago.

I know that an airbender such as Tenzin is around in Legend of Korra but it makes me sad that there is a lost of culture of the Air nomads.

Mehh, I 'd like to see the son of a former Avatar be somewhat of a loose canon but still wise enough to guide Korra.

Not too sure of that... I'm certain all of what Aang knows of his people's ways and culture is only limited to what he learned in the 12 years that he was a monk before he ran away. It certainly can't compare to the amount of knowledge that someone of Monk Gyatso's standing and age knows about. Sorry but from my understanding when you're the 12 year old remnant of your people as a result of racial genocide, I don't expect you to be the keeper of practically all of your people's cultural traditions. Whatever Air nomad culture managed to survive with Aang and got passed on to his son will most likely be very limited and not the totality of what was once lost. War changes all it touches... some won't last, but most things are changed forever by it.
