The first thing I thought of when I saw that was the bill they're trying to pass about monkeys, or the fact that Congress has become a complete joke worth mocking.
The cartoon isn't racist, I just think a lot of people are itching to throw a hissy fit and accuse anyone that doesn't agree with Obama's ideas/plans racist.
The monkey =/= Obama.
The monkey =/= all black people.
The monkey = Congress.
Turn on CSPAN, people. You'll see how ridiculous the people running this country have become.

I have to admit that the first time i saw it, my first thought was that the monkey was suppose to be Obama, but when i thought it over, it's not like Obama wrote it, Congress did. It's just that when people here "stimulus bill", the first person that comes to mind for most people is Obama. Hypothetically, this cartoon wouldn't have been as offensive if Obama wasn't black (am I suppose to African-American? I'm not good with PC)[/s]. I heard that many protesters of the cartoon demanded that the cartoonist and the editor-in-chief be fired, and although i don't really sympathize all that much with sean delonas, I think it's out of line to ask for the editor-in-chief to be fired. I think all those people that protested it were just too quick to jump on the POLITICAL ACTIVISM band wagon, (and Al Sharpton is always one to jump in on anything that'll give him publicity.)

The comic's not funny, in the end. I feel like this guy was just using shock value to get attention. SHOCK VALUE DOES NOT EQUAL LAUGHS. Why can't these people get it through their heads? Sometimes shock-comedy is funny, but definitely not all the time.

[/quote] You have to look at the track record of the artist. Why do you think I provided the second link to show some of his other work? This isnt the kind of guy who is going to make distinctions about drafting a bill and signing it into law. Just because the chief editor of the New York post gives his intepretation of what the cartoon suppose to convey doesnt make it so. As far as I know, the artist himself hasnt agreed to that intepretation.

*rises from the dead*
Yes, I know. Its been awhile.
My thought?
Of all the articles and material that gets checked, double-checked, combed over and questioned before being published in a fairly widespread newspaper, I find it hard to believe not one person stopped and asked, "would this cartoon be considered racist?" Face it, a drawing of a dead monkey and reference to the political action toward the stimulus bill is inevitably going to be perceived as a racist remark toward the president by the public. Common sense.
No matter how you cut the corners. It's not like the people running the NY Post are completely incompetent or uneducated.
I'm willing to bet that someone--heck, maybe even more than one--did think "this might get somebody fired." And the technicality "Obama didn't WRITE the stimulus bill, he only signed it so that's not who they're talking about" comes off as a slipshod and flimsy excuse . Not saying those who argue that thought necessarily support it though. But honestly, if you can clearly SEE how it could be taken as a racist remark, then there's no argument.
Whether or not the comic was meant to shock, offend, or envoke a chuckle is irrelevant. It was irresponsible and I'm pretty darn sure the editor in that office had some idea that printing the comic was gonna come back to bite him.

I dont think the public should really be in charge of what should be considered racist.
The reason for this is the racist bandwagon is more or less a way to meet people than an actual call to arms. The significance of preventing racism dies in its frequency. When people are more willing to band together and come to arms over "big government" or "big business" to fight a racist claim than to take a little bit of moral responsibility rather than turn a cheek whenever one random racist person has an outburst at a store. For hundreds of years, human stupidity has been referred to as chimp-like, but it wasnt until recent years that the black-monkey connection was established. So the former is automatically disregarded because we have new, "better" language to insult people (i.e. gay, f*g, etc.) so we keep the inherent belief in our heads that monkeys = chimps. In fact, people widely claiming that that monkey was a black man is kind of more racist. The artist defines it, and everyone disregards it and automatically assumes that that monkey is a black man.
Dont you think thats a bit odd?

I don't think the cartoon is necessarily racist, however it is in extremely poor taste. Also, that dude sucks as a political cartoonist. His work is neither insightful nor funny. I could do as well as he does, and... well, that ain't sayin' much.

I see a great big double standard going on here. Sure, its okay to compare Bush to a chimp on numerous occaisons but as soon as someone does it to Obama OH NOES EVERYONES GOTTA CRAP THEIR PANTS! Its OBVIOUSLY racist! HUUR
Bottom line, people in this country are too sensetive. I see nothing offensive about this cartoon, I think the metaphore being used is appropriate. Especially since many people feel the whole stimulus package deal is a big farce and only going to make things worse. Anyway that doesn't mean I think the cartoon is good, actually I think its kinda mediocre, and most political cartoonist nowadays wouldn't know good satire if it bit em' in the arse, but I digress.
Yakuza and Too-ticky's posts sum my feelings more adequately.

Its OBVIOUSLY racist! HUUR Because everyone knows black supremacists like to compare white people to chimpanzees! While I don't think it's intended to be racist, it is not comparable to the Bush jokes. There is no remotely conceivable relation between Bush/Chimp jokes and racism, no double standard.

I will agree with you on that. I don't believe it's intended to be racist either, now that I look at it and after reading some posts - but I still thinks it's stupid, unfunny, and in extremely poor taste. Again, the guy's just using shock comedy to get attention... except he sucks. XD

He tried too hard to sneak it out like a fart in a crowded elevator. He meant no harm, but everyone wanted his head for his actions.
God after reading that, that is like the best analogy I could have ever thought of for this situation.
He does some tasteless comics, yes, but he must be doing something right if he's made a large career out of it.
