Linn straightened her robe as she entered the cool shadow of the hallway. Dawn, and it was already hot outside. At least she could be thankful that she didn't have to wear these long robes all the time. But today was Senator Maurus' trial, something she was expected to be present for. With the Senate running the city, the trial of a Senator was unprecedented: usually sectors nominated leaders who were of high moral fiber. They were all people of good standing, even if they were from different walks of life. Maurus was one of their number. Linn remembered him distinctly as very clean looking fellow, smart but soft-spoken. The whole idea that he might have attacked someone seemed preposterous. She nodded to several people in the hall before passing through an archway into the main room. It was a large stone amphitheater, with benches moving gradually down to the low floor. Though the room was built to hold at least a hundred from the early days of the city, now it held only the handful of senators on the third row, several of whom nodded in recognition when Linn came in the room. She went down as few steps before picking a row, choosing to remain in the back where she would remain out of the way.
If Linn had learned anything in her time at Ba Sing Se, it was to trust the common people. Maurus was a good man, and he would not be given an unjust punishment.
~~~~~
The extra water glowed over the wound. Pao could tell the man was lying by his hesitation, but didn't press farther. He wasn't good with people the way Fenny was. He hadn't even been able to get along with his own kind. He was surprised when the man asked a question of his own. "I hid, along with some of the others. Those of us who were too wise, too injured or too cowardly to go fight. We hid amongst the plants, so most of them never suspected. The few who did, I and another waterbender we able to encase in a tree before fleeing." "We weren't able to go back immediately since they patrolled the area, but when we did go back no one was there. Nowadays I keep hoping to hear something, but it seems the caravan is split for good." Pao frowned inwardly as he examined his finished handiwork. It almost looked like the arm had been severed by rock than steel. "Did you-" "-You'll never guess what happened!" Fenny broke in cheerfully, closing the door behind her. She seemed so excited as compared to when she left, it was as if a completely different person had entered the room. "I pawned off that stupid hat for forty gold pieces! I went and got us both rooms at The Jade Comb, it's a little boarding house overlooking the fields, not far from here. I also picked up food, and clothes." Fenny tossed a brown and gold bundle on the bed for Matsu. "I didn't know if you wanted red or green, so I went a bit inbetween- oh, sorry, was I interrupting you guys?" Fenny stopped short in her cascade of dialogue, looking from Matsu to Pao.
OOC- FINALS ARE OVER! NO SCHOOL UNTIL AUGUST! Matsu smiled tiredly at Fenny. "I liked that hat....really you didn't have to buy me new clothes...these are fine." He was lying. They were to big for his starving form, they were torn, dirty, bloody, smelly, and his shoes were also falling apart. He pushed his left hand against the surface he had been laid upon and tried to push himself into a sitting position.
Pao's mouth twitched slightly with a smile at Fenny's entrance. Fenny frowned and crossed her arms. "You're a terrible liar: you hated that gaudy old thing. Luckily the fellow who bought it was more interested in it as an antique than as a headpiece." "You make it sound more like an ugly vase than a hat." mentioned Pao, not knowing what hat they were talking about. Fenny was about to reply, when she noticed Matsu moving. "Careful!" yelped Fenny, rushing over to Matsu as he pushed himself up on the table. "He's alright for now." said Pao, "He may experience some fatigue later, but most people sleep during the hottest parts of the day anyway. You need to come to me later. There are some herbs you should be taking to help ward off any further sickness from your injuries. I don't have them with me this morning, but I'll bring them with me to the festival this evening to make sure you get them." he added, switching to address Matsu. He glanced back at Fenny. "Get something to eat, both of you. You both look worn down to the bones. I know that sandbender gruel isn't so great when you're used to normal bread and meat."
Matsu nodded. "Yes sir, I'll do that." He slowly swung his feet over and got up. He swayed a moment but then his back straightend. "Sandbender food is better then nothing. Where are we staying Fenny?" His eyes swung back over to her. "I thought Noa and I.."
Fenny shook her head. "I have no idea where Noa is. Haven't seen him since we got off the sailor. But he's probably already gotten a place near Hati. We can probably search for him later. Then you guys can make arrangements for when housing is more available." "The city is big, but he probably hasn't gotten far if he came in on the same sailor. Try asking around." offered Pao. "And the place we're staying isn't that far. I got a couple of rooms at the Jade Comb, just down the street. It's nice. They've even got a small bath." said Fenny, jabbing her thumb towards the door.
Saiki carefully ignored Ikram's "good luck" and instead nodded at his suggestion to go inside. She gently nudged Abeni. "Let's go inside, ok?" She was looking forward to a bed and bath; it felt like ages since she'd slept anywhere but on a sandsailor.
((OOC@Liz -- Just checking so I'm sure; Jade Comb is the same place where Saiki is staying?
@8leggedbutterfly -- You should probably RP as the inkeeper, since Ikram knows her))
((OOC: Yay for summer! Hiatus over.
@darkblood_alchemist: Sure! I'll rp the innkeeper, no problem. Just need to think of a name for her! Heh.))
Marus walked calmly into the ampitheater, an impassive expression upon his face. He knew he would get off - his position as senator made him nearly irreproachable. As long as he was properly remorseful, as long as he blamed the drink...
His jaw clenched tight as he mentally reproached himself. He had to learn to control his temper; it was as bright and unrestrained as the fire he loathed, leaking out and burning even when he tried his hardest to keep it locked away.
The other senators were all there, looking uncomfortable; after all, he was setting something of a precedent. Marus stepped up to the wooden block in the center, giving the room a tight smile.
"My fellow senators, I believe I owe you an explanation."
~~~
Ikram followed Saiki and Abeni into the inn. There was no one at the counter to help them. He walked up and peered over, trying to spot any signs of life. "Hello?" he called. "Anyone there?"
"Just a minute; just a minute!" a warm, feminine voice called. "I'll be there in a second."

"I should say you do." Baahir, the oldest senator, spoke first behind steepled fingers and a quivering mustache. "You have been charged with-" he fumbled with the papers in front of him "...assault, as well as disturbing the peace." "He attacked a firebender without cause! That's Treason, against the Code of Equality and Ethics!" shouted a younger senator, jumping up from his seat. Sheng led the Southeast sector of the city, and was very obviously of Fire Nation heritage with his inky black hair and fair skin. Talk broke out amongst the other senators. The rules were quite picky when it came to issues like this; there were laws against persecuting firebenders for their heritage (and it extended to other groups as well). But the fact that Senator Sheng (at the very least a firebender sympathizer) had introduced the information, raised a question of if there was a bias and exactly which way it leaned. "Wait." a voice rang clearly above the din, causing many of the Senators to stop and look. Linn sat quietly on her stone bench, hands folded neatly in her lap. "I'd like to hear what happened. What he has to say." It was a perfectly legitimate request, one that was often asked by observers to other trials, when many people came and not everyone knew what was going on. But somehow, from the former queen it seemed groundbreaking. "Yes," agreed Baahir firmly, "We should recount the incident to better pinpoint the crime." His gaze stayed firmly on Maurus.

OOC- After a long time, that's a good question. I have utterly no idea. It can be though!
"I just want to sleep." Matsu sonuded weary. He was still worried about the idea of Geming being in the city- locked up or not. He had no doubt that the man would find a way to bust out and destroy the city.
"What is this place?" Abeni hid almost behind Saiki. "Are we gonna live here now? I want to find Geming not live here." She whimpered.

Saiki tried gently to pull Abeni out from behind her. Great, a child with a one-track mind, she thought bitterly. "We're just going to stay here for a little while," Saiki explained. "It'll take a long time to find someone in a city this big, but we'll start looking when we get settled in." Saiki was careful to leave out the phrase 'I promise'. With any luck Abeni would forget about him, and either way she had no desire to go visit the prison, where he must have gone after his arrest. "For now let's just focus on getting a nice, soft bed for the night, ok?"

Abeni let herself be dragged out into the open, she held onto Saiki's hand tightly though. "Will people ask if we ask nicely?"She chewed on the inside of her cheek and looked frightend. "It's such a big big place...I've never seen anywhere so big. I'm scared." She added lamely and squeezed Saiki's hand.

(OOC: I think the place where Saiki, Abeni and Ikram are staying is different from the Jade Comb, since Fenny said it was near the fields, and Ikram's place is near a shop, which is probably more deeply embedded in the alley. But they would be very close by, so they may run into each other. )
"You're in luck then, because I know for sure they have beds." Fenny teased, still in good spirits. Being in the city excited her, and finding Pao had really boosted her spirits. Things were going right for a change.
"Would you like me to escort you there?" asked Pao. He still didn't know much about this man or his connection to Fenny. The way they talked, they seemed somewhat close. Still, he felt it best to watch over Fenny if he could. "The doctor.. will probably be wanting his office back." he added.

((OOC-- actually it's next to the fields too, but whatever you want to do is fine))
Saiki squeezed Abeni's hand in return. She didn't know how to comfort the child without making promises that she didn't intend to keep. Her free hand toyed with the end of her braid. What's taking the innkeeper so long? she thought in frustration. She wanted a distraction to take Abeni's mind off of Geming.
((It's been forever since Master Pakku has posted last, so I'm going to just "free" Huojin from dealing with an inactive character))
Huojin stepped into the dark room after delivering the medicine and went over to her young patient. A quick check told her that his wounds were clean and would heal nicely, although she was a little concerned that he had slept for so long without stirring. She shrugged and concluded that she might as well give him back to the guards. They would be able to watch him until he woke up and find him a place to stay afterwards. In addition, she had to finish up the last few fireworks for the festival and that involved testing them as well which could be dangerous if something went wrong. After one last glance to make sure that her patient was alright, she swept out of the room again and made her way quickly to the nearest guard station.

Ikram watched Saiki and Abeni with vague interest. He watched the girl play with the tail of her braid and couldn't help but grin.
"Sorry, sorry," a woman's voice said suddenly - and a moment later a tall, stocky woman with auburn hair walked out to stand behind the counter. She crossed her arms over her chest and turned to her guests, as though irritated to have patrons at the inn. "Can I... Ikram!" She seemed surprised to see him. But then she cracked a wide smile. "Haven't seen you around in awhile. What trouble have you gotten in this time?"
"No trouble at all," he said with an answering grin. "Surely you don't think I can't stay out of it for a few days, at least. I'm not here for me, though." He gestured towards Saiki and Abeni. "These two lovely ladies need a room."
~~~
Marus nodded graciously. "Thank you." He felt Baahir's eyes on him, and he bit back a grimace at the disgust he felt for the man. "Simply put, what happened was this: I had rather more to drink than I should have, and I had a bit of an altercation with another man. And I assure you, the rumors circulating that I attacked him due to his heritage are completely unfounded." He stood tall, looking around the room calmly. Of course that wouldn't be enough, but he needed to see what they knew, what they thought. Then he would know how best to smooth things over for good.
"Nothing too expensive ma'am," Saiki said quickly, stepping forward a little. "Just somewhere to stay until we get settled." She didn't want to be even more indebted to Ikram, so she was anxious to take care of this herself. She spared him a quick glance. 'Trouble?' she thought, recalling the inkeeper's greeting. No, definitely not someone to be indebted to.
