Avatar: The Last Airbender Flashback: "The Blind Bandit" Review
Our look back at season two introduces us to a short, stubborn, blind Earthbender.

July 14, 2008 - So far this season has had a lot of ups and some downs, this episode however isn't an up or a down, it's hovering somewhere between up and the greatest Avatar episode ever!
Right from the get go, the hysterical bit lulls us in with Sokka deciding whether or not to buy a bag. The truth behind that whole situation was so real, it was like is was watching my wife shopping for a bag, and I have a feeling if you're reading this and have a significant other, you have probably witnessed this type of shopping insanity as well. The funniest part about this gag was that it totally paid off half way through the episode, when out of nowhere Sokka says, "Why did you let me get this bag?" It was so perfect, that I actually felt bad for the writer that went through that.
Also this episode we got to see some more Sokka hilarity during the Earthbending tournament. Watching him go nuts during the EBT was classic, and if you've ever watched a wrestling match, I'm sure you found yourself cheering as enthusiastically as Sokka. The writers of the show seem to have really found a voice for Sokka in season two, and it works perfectly for him.
The writing of all of the different characters in the tournament was awesome, each one a unique and believable wrestling character. Of course the most interesting of them all was Toph, a blind Earthbender who happens to also be a 12-year-old girl. Her "blind sight" as she would listen to the Earth was just plain cool to watch. When her and Aang get captured, it was absolutely incredible to watch her dispose of the wrestler thugs as if they were nothing.

One of my favorite parts about this episode was they way they treated Toph's blindness. The writers could have gotten really preachy like they have in the past about a controversial topic, but instead they treated her like any other character. Her parents however played the role of the over protective guardians of a feeble and helpless girl. Which pays off in spades and splinters off to a new story line.
"The Blind Bandit" was an episode of pure entertainment from beginning to end. It really did have the perfect blend of humor, action, and drama. It had no lows and was chock-full of highs. If there was an episode that you should cheer, it is this one. With the introduction to a new character in Toph, the coming of age in Sokka's humor, Katara's new go get 'em attitude, and Aang's understanding of the things he is beginning to realize within himself, "The Blind Bandit" has something for everyone. This is clearly the must see episode of the second season.
