They once billed themselves as the Loudest Band in the World and it was safe to say that they were deserving of that title. Hailing from London, England, these four rockers rose to stardom following the Mod fad of the mid 1960's before exploding into hard rock superstardom. The personalities were exceptionally varied. (Clockwise from top) John Entwistle makes up for his rock-like stage presence with his technical skill and talent at the bass. Roger Daltry's cocky swagger and microphone swinging antics made him the frontman's frontman. Keith Moon's insane drumming style and off-stage antics made him legendary as the ultimate rock and roll star. Pete Townshend's showmanship and guitar skill (having invented several on-stage moves like the windmill) is tempered by his profound songs and mystical beliefs. Their music are anthems, being used in advertisements and as the themes to the CSI shows. Discuss your favorite albums, songs, shows, and side-projects here. Oh you've done it now. I lived and breathed The Who for most of two of my high school years. We all went retro, splitting into groups that obsessed over The Who, The Doors, The Grateful Dead and a couple of sad cats who went for the Rolling Stones. Anyway, I wanted to post a couple of additional vids. I'm so glad you posted Behind Blue Eyes. I hate it when a cover is done of a classic song and nobody knows the superiority of the original. Pete Townsend is an amazing song writer and performer. He created all his crazy moves because Roger Daltrey was the good looking lead singer and Townsend wanted some attention too (he admits this). He ended up pretty much stealing the show. But all of them were so amazing (even stoic John Entwistle) it must have been hard to know where to look at any given time during a show. I know Townsend and Daltrey sometimes still perform together, but somehow it doesn't seem right. I'd go see either one of them solo, but not together as The Who. Pete Townsend did a solo concert that resulted in a video and LP called 'Deep End Live' and both of these videos are from that. The first one -- Save It For Later -- is cover of a song by English Beat. This vid is only a static shot of the album cover with the music, but it's such a great piece I wanted to share it. His performance of this shows so much of what made The Who such a great band (even though he didn't write the song and it's not The Who. LOL). And then one of my favorite songs of all time -- I'm One -- is from the same concert (the actual video from the show) although it originally appears on the Quadrophenia album. If you can listen to this song and understand the words and not feel like Pete Townsend has lived a part of your life ... well... you're not me. (whatever that means) Anyway, thanks for making this thread.

I love "I'm One." Unfortunately, the link leads to "Save it for Later," too. ._.
EDIT: Never mind.
I saw the Who (in Pete & Roger form) in Detroit on September 29, 2006. I've still got the ticket stub. I can see where you're coming from, considering that John and Keith are notably absent, but they still put on a kick a** show. Easily, one of the best experiences of my life. To be fair, the replacements they got are no slouches. On bass was Pino Palladino of John Mayer Trio fame and on drums was the next best thing to Keith Moon himself: Zak Starkey. He may be the son of a Beatle, but he plays just like Keith.

Yeah, they get the best musicians to perform with them. The guy playing drums on Deep End is Simon (forgot the last name) and he actually went on to tour with the Who in the late '80s. He's very amazing. And on Deep End he's got Dave Gilmore (Pink Floyd) on lead guitar! Have you seen Deep End Live? I can't recommend it highly enough. Especially for anyone who loves The Who. Pete does versions of so many of their great songs it's just ... uh oh, I might squeal right now just thinking about it. BTW: I fixed the link. I tested them right after I posted and saw the problem. Embarrassing. I love all the vids you posted. I want to say which one is my favorite but I just can't. So what's your favorite song on Who's Next and do you think that's their best album?

I haven't seen Deep End. (BTW, David Gilmour hates it when people call him "Dave")
As for best song, there's so many good ones. I'm quite partial to "Getting in Tune," though. In any case, Who's Next is their magnum opus. When one thinks of the Who in their prime, they go to Who's Next. Personally, my favorite album is Tommy because I like the idea of rock opera and I like the narrative and how I relate to it.

I do love Who's Next, but I am very, very partial to Quadrophenia. On Who's Next it's between Baba O'Reilly, The Song is Over, Behind Blue Eyes, and Won't Get Fooled Again. Four songs in the running for favorite. But I think Behind Blue Eyes wins. They're all brilliant but that one gets me every time. The Who version. Not the pale imitation, Limp Bizkit version (sorry but it just doesn't hold a candle .... IMO). You must see Deep End if you can get it. It's probably on Netflix. David Gilmore (who shall be 'Dave' forever to me now that I know he hates it ) does a song as well. I must go to bed. Nice chattin' with ya. I know what I'm listening to in the car tomorrow!

Album > Movie > Musical It's a bit of a shame that most people my generation (pun intended) and younger only know them for three or four songs.

Baba O'Riley is one of my favorite songs evah. I love The Who. I like their name too, it confuses people if they don't know what you're talking about.

The Who is my ABSOLUTE favorite band! Thank you so much for this thread.
My favorite songs are probably "A Quick One While He's Away," "Sparks," "Rael Parts 1 & 2," and "5:15."
My favorite albums would most likely be Live at Leeds, Quadrophenia, and The Who Sell Out.
To all reading this thread, I whole heartily recommend getting their 'rockumentary' The Kids Are Alright which is a hilarious look into the band. It is not the sort of documentary in which a film crew just spends all of their time following the band while they garble pretentious nonsense, but rather it is a non-chronological compilation of the Who from a variety of their past performances, appearances, and clips. As Roger Daltrey puts it, "Most rock films are pretentious. They're made for the sole purpose of making Robert Plant's twig look big. This is totally the opposite. Within the first half hour we're made to look like complete idiots."
