I'm more into 80's songs than the bands themselves but Journey has always caught my interest.

Fireman lists some good ones, but chaobender scores massive points by listing Toto on there. A couple really excellent ones that neither of you listed are Genesis (they got their start in the mid-70s but they were still big a decade later) and The Police! C'mon guys, Message in a Bottle? Roxanne? You know you love 'em.
EDIT: Journey, too, but I see Chibi Chan covered that one. And nobody mentioned U2, although their sound was so different from everyone else's and they're still so popular now that it's tough to diagnose their decade.

Well half of the bands started out in the 70's, even for my favorite group The Human League, which of course started in 78 and currently went all the way into 2001, which of course are on Tour now, plus have their own DVD for the Music videos that some cable networks don't usually play much anymore.

Don't forget the real alternative scene that popped up in the 80's:
Talking Heads (though they might actually have their start in the late 70's?) U2 (yes, they had an awesome garage band sound in the 80s) The Dead Milkmen Echo and the Bunnymen The Cure They Might be Giants The Smiths Depeche Mode Siouxsie & the Banshees R.E.M. (again, a garage band sound) The Mighty Lemon Drops
I started getting worn out on classic rock in the 80s because just like today, they played the crap out of Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, etc. I needed to hear something different. ;D
