You're lucky you have help. I dont have the help of my old teacher anymore, and I dont want to put it on the internet for someone to edit for me, 'cause someone could easily say it's theirs and steal it from me, even if I put the copywrite symbol on it.

You could ask your friends to help. Or your parents. Or just someone you trust.

I have several plots started, and some fully fleshed out. But I lack the nerve to actually start in on them in earnest. (I'm also somewhat hesitant to start one because of the research work I'd have to put in.) I have given some serious thought to trying my hand at a multi-chapter fanfic (somewhere in the 25,000 - 30,000 word range) to get myself started....
Any thoughts?

Well, apparently, I write the same way Stephen King does in that I like to come up with a situation first, and then see how the characters get out of it. That said, who better than he to take writing lessons from? He wrote a wonderful book that I suggest any aspiring writer pick up called On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. It's two parts autobiography, one part writing advice, and the entire thing is a great read alone, but the writing advice is very useful. Of course, one could only expect as much coming from the master of horror himself. The advice contained within that book has helped me turn my writing around considerably.

Thanks Nerull! I'll have to check my library to see if they have that book. Strangely enough, that's also how I create plots - except I sometimes abandon the plot because I cannot find a satisfactory resolution to the conflict...
Does anyone find they have become more critical of other authors as a result of your writing? For example, I used to enjoy Brother Cadfel mysteries, but now I'm often irritated by annoyingly angelic murder suspects, obvious plot devices ect. (One character had 'faintly luminous violet eyes', elaborate dresses and hairstyles, and a tendency to faint dramatically during crowd scenes.) I often find myself thinking more about how I would have written the book, than about the book itself.

(One character had 'faintly luminous violet eyes', elaborate dresses and hairstyles, and a tendency to faint dramatically during crowd scenes.) I often find myself thinking more about how I would have written the book, than about the book itself. Well, it depends on the author. If it's someone like Stephen King, or Mary Higgins Clark, or R. A. Salvatore, all of whom should know better, I tend to give them more leash than I would someone obviously new and largely untested. Published authors who have been at it for years and years know better and probably didn't intentionally do it, or rather, did it, and didn't realize it til afterward. Someone new to the game would do that and probably not even realize it, even after they sent it off for publishing and remaining oblivious to it until the feedback starts rolling in. I try not to be judgmental, but I can't help but think in the back of my mind how far these newbies to the art of writing have to go before they could be considered anything resembling good.

How did I miss this thread?
I am a writer. Currently I have 3 novel ideas floating around, and I shuffle between them according what's going on in my life. Some of my characters feel as real to me as people I know. Better, because I know what they're thinking, feeling in any situation.

I'm a writer.
Currently, I'm working on a 5-book series and I've finished one book already.
The fun part is when I realize that my characters are a lot like people I know. One of my characters, Grace, is a lot like me. And her boyfriend reminds me SO much of mine. It's somewhat ironic because I started the series before I even knew my boyfriend.
Although being a writer often takes the fun out of movies. Take Meet The Robinsons for example. I missed the very beginning and I was still able to guess almost the entire ending, except for a detail I missed because I missed the beginning.

I want to be a writer. I'm currently still developing (after 11 years) on different comic book series ranging from teen superhero to crime noir to gothic fantasy to anime-style sci-fi. I also have ideas for indy-style movies. Right now though I've just been working on characters and outline, I have no idea where to start writing. Maybe when I find someone in college who can draw (at least better than I can) I'll get serious and actually sit down and write the beginning.
So yeah, more screenplays and comics than actual books.

I'm a writer... definitely. I've written tons of fanfics and short stories, and I'm in the process of working on a very intricate set of novels. there are 5 planned, and I have 3 1/2 done. however, they were out of order... (3, 4, 2, 5, 1) Part 1: nothing. possibly a title, but absolutely nothing else Part 2: written out; not typed, still needs to be finalized Part 3: written, typed, and almost completely finalized. Part 4: written and typed, but still being finalized for now Part 5: still in the process of being written and devloped.
so ya. writer 4 lyfe. Oh, and in the entire series (not necessarily in each novel) there is a total of 110 named characters, 70 of whcih have last name, and 40 of those have full names.

I've written over a hundred fanfics.
For some reason, those come out faster than my original books.
