Try this emulator which is also very good: viceteam.orgGet the Windows binary. Note that this won't install an icon in the Start menu. Instead, open the directory you chose to drop the files in, and look for the C64 icon. (This actually emulates 6 different Commodore computers of the era.) *Configure Joystick in: Settings >>> Joystick *Initiate games from: File >>> Autostart *If you need to change "disks" during the game use: File >>> Attach >>> Drive 8 *If a game doesn't run, try toggling the checkmark in: Options >>> True drive emulation (and restart the game afterwards) *For a more real blast to the past use: Options >>> Double Size Note that the keyboard layout matches a true C64... a few of the keys above the cursor keys are used as well. For games you can also use gamebase64.com although some download links have been removed. There are 18,800 entries... these guys spent years at this. While it is true that the C64 has a huge amount of games, the 18,800 actually counts some games more than once, as they might have been released in different countries with different names (and hence different graphic title screens), or are the same game in different languages, etc.

grangran, you will most likely be just fine with reinstalling the whole directx package: www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/default.mspxI'm just always cautious, since I'm in IT and have seen every nightmare scenario. I would say 9 times out of 10 that will reinstall without a hitch.

Well, you will have to let me know how it goes. We haven't come this far to give up now!
@kurious Thx for the link to another emulator =D However, you do realize that this is breaking other stuff on her computer now, and needs to be fixed?

Karma to Kurious! He takes me back to the times when super geekdom was required to play on a computer!
Thanks for the links!

WinVICE has an option called "Render to DX Primary surface", which is off by default. While it is true that the vast majority of Windows software that does graphics use DirectX, some just use Win32 primitives instead. I just offered that option as a simple thing to try, who knows... maybe it would have worked. In any case, I didn't expect you to stop offering her proper advice. Anyway, I hope we get to talk about C64 games soon. Perhaps in its own thread.

LOL!
I am treading carefully at this moment. I crashed my laptop a while back and haven't gotten it fixed and the boat anchor posing as a PC is still not back to normal after my over zealous virus hunting, shortly after the the Laptop keeled over... If I kill it for C64 games I will not only be dead in the water, but pretty much dead for good! ;D
Thanks a bunch, I keep it all in mind! I might try it, once i get a decent backup going!

I'm sure grangran would like that. That's one of the first directx "optinal" programs I've seen then that gives you a choice on the directx. Usually apps are driven by opengl, directx, or some proprietary engine, all with various features/settings. That's the first time I've seen it where you can render video with more than 1 tech. That's pretty cool. She was mentioning this: Darnit, I think I need to fix the Direct3D anyhow - my Yugioh game won't run! which is why I kept plodding on with the directx fix.

But Grangran! You must fix your PCs before we can talk about C64 games. I only wanted to recommend a few...
