Most of the movies I haven't even heard of and only a few actors actually ring a bell.
I am not sure if it is a good thing or a bad thing, because in the past th critics suggested that the Oscars is a purely economic selection not really to award art over box office success.

I don't understand your term "economic selection" as it applies to the oscars. But I don't follow that biz, so that 'prolly explains my ignorance.
Are you referring to an inside network sort of thing where a producing company is trying to get more exposure for their movie?

No dont worry, the Oscars are still meaningless. I mean they gave Crash best picture, and didnt award Howls Moving Castle.

Usually the pictures that are selected are the ones that a) stand out at the box office and b) seldom released before thanks Giving, or are re-released again in December or January to be fresh in everybody's mind. Or so it has been at times in the past. To judge artistic merit, I think institutions like the Golden Palm of Cannes are more reliable. But Europe draws from a greater cultural back ground. Seldom do you see the need to remake an American film, while you seldom see a foreign movie dubbed and released into mainstream theaters. But remakes are rampant and not always equal or better than the original. (Three men and a Baby etc) Top European actors seldom get to work here, and then as second banana... (and the curse of the sequel, don't get me started!) OK, back to the Oscars!

I don't care about anything about the Oscars, except that Meryl Streep really needs to win for her performance in Devil Wears Prada. I've seen her in a couple of other films and she is a great actress. I really hope she wins.

Well years list is rather interesting, I was hoping Blood Diamond would be up for best film but ho luck there. I would say The Departed is going to take out best film, it got huge hype and did really well (must see it). For best supporting actor I would love to see Djimon Hounsou win, he is a really amazing actor and deserves some credit for it. Good to see Aocalypto in for a few awards, hope that does well as well.
