Another ironic thing about how people think all Hispanic countries (my definition of hispanic being "The term refers to the culture and language of the Spanish-speaking countries of Hispanic America and Spain; or countries with a historical legacy with Spain") all speak Spanish, but there's so much variation to every country that it's unique in every place. hmm. 'tis very screwy Louie. (...I like taco bell D:) I think a simple solution to politcal correctness is if one has to fill out a form where race/ethnicity is required (which it shouldn't most of the time), they should simply have a blank line where the individual can write what race fits them best. Like, instead of putting "Hispanic" one should put, "Cuban" or instead of "Asian" one should be able to put "Malaysian". They do this for "statistics", "supposedly". It's time that the so called statistics should be more specific and less vague.

^Why thank you! ^_^
And I've hated Taco Bell ever since I got food poisoning from eating a taco after a rather delightful day at a Pow Wow two years ago. D:

Also if I remember correctly people who live in South American don't consider themselves Hispanic. They consider themselves South American.
The term hispanic has a lot of problems with it. Unfortunately I forgot those specific problems, but I think it's a racial classification that is not as accurate as Latino/a is. i wish i remembered it, lol, this is not good. i have a test in the class that's talkign about this stuff in a week.
hmm, I remember someone talking about not dating outside their religion, and i was thinking of the Jews and how screwy that being jewish is treated like a racial stereotype. It's all messed up.
Oh and Spirit Mage, if you're interested in movies, I watched several movies from that class that were all very good.
here's a list off the top of my head: Crash The Scottsboro Boys (also a book - this case was so messed up) Memory of the Camps (A live-footage documentation of Nazi concentration camps - warning: lots of corpses in this film and it has the possibility of being very disturbing. I think it was from Frontline, but I'm not sure.)
there was another film but i don't remember the name of it. But it was another documentary that talked about the Mexican "blowouts" in East LA in the 1960's. Basically high school students, who were discriminated against (they received a crappier education, their history wasn't in the textbooks, they were forbidden to speak Spanish in school or they were hit with a paddle, and they were locked out of the school during Lunch) rose up and protested by the masses by basically striking against the schools.
The Brown Berets (who were the Mexican and Latino/a equivalent of The Black Panthers) got involved and it turned into a political mess. By the way, the 60's is an incredibly interesting time to study - especially 60's California history.
Edit: Living about 45 minutes away from the mexican border, I declare Taco Bell is the furthest thing from mexican food you can possibly imagine. Mexican food is so much more awesome, lol.

It's time that the so called statistics should be more specific and less vague. There's only one problem: that's not race. That's nationality. Race is skin color, and other genetic traits. EX: Blacks, men in particular, have dark skin, broader noses, larger lips, and hair like wool on a sheep. Caucasians have paler skin, smaller noses, straight hair, and thinner noses/smaller lips. Those are characteristics of race. Nationality however, is the place of one's birth/residence. EX: German, Spanish, Burmese, Chinese, Japanese, American, English, Irish, Russian, Indian, Ugandan, Sudanese, Chadian, etc. See the difference?

Oh sorry about that. My mistake. I was told that a while ago so my memory may have distorted it a little.
it's really confusing to categorize by those terms because a lot of Spanish-speaking countries think of themselves differently as you pointed out. At least that's what I remember.

Well, I'd imagine that those who lived in South America wouldn't refer to themselves as "latino/a" or "hispanic" in the first place... They coined up that term in the U.S. during the mid- 70s. Just like how those of African descent who live in the Carribbean don't call themselves "African American" or "Black". I wouldn't see them using the term "Black" since I'd imagine that most of them have more ties to Africa then we do. Speaking of which, why is it that if one sees a Black or African person anywhere besides the U.S. and Africa, they are referred to as "African-AMERICAN"? It's probably a slip up, but even if they were Canadian, someone would still accidently think the words, "African- American". And another thing. How did we get from talking about race and dating to political correctness (though most of it is my doing)?

African American, to my knowledge was a term that black people called themselves to shed the older politically correct term of negro in the late 60's early 70's (I think). I could be wrong about this but i think it was a way to gain an identity that sheds all neagtive aspects or associations with the previous term.
The identity might have evolved again, recently, to black - but don't quote me on that.
Anyone know about this?
Also I have a question for the African Americans on the forum. I heard about a concept that exists in black culture called Color Politics, where African Americans are treated differently based on their skin tone (with darker = more pride and lighter = more scrutiny). I was wondering if this plays a factor in dating and in general - in a broad perspective (because like any generalization this doesn't happen to everyone).
But for those of you guys who have seen this, Color Politics, play out - what are your thoughts on it? Is it wrong, right, justified, unjustified? What do you think?

Yeah. Color politics, or colorism, definately plays a role. This isn't just among Blacks either. Apparently, the lighter skin tone one has, the prettier, or possibly richer, one is. Society has associated light skin tones with higher society, since in countries such as China and Laos and other countries also, if you have light skin and smooth feet, that means you aren't a servent or work out in the sun. The rich carried parsols just to keep the sun off of their skin to keep from tanning.
In the black community, if a girl is light skinned and looks more "exotic", chances are, she's going to attract more guys. This, of course, causes more resentment in the community, which doesn't really get us anywhere. -_-
I made a thread on this awhile back.
Dunno where it is though...

There is a thread on this subject. It's the Shadism thread I do believe. I do ask that you read the arguments there and post your own thoughts instead of here, as that would steer this thread off topic. Thanks! =D

Apologies for sounding stupid, but what does "non-Hispanic" mean? I feel like I've missed out on something here..
