Azula DOES enjoy inflicting pain, but at the same time she's not cruel just for cruelty's sake. She's extremely methodical and has a purpose behind everything she does. It just isn't consistent with her character to set Zuko up for failure like that if it didn't serve to help her achieve her goals in some way.

Especially after allowing him to join her side in the first place. She needed Zuko to regain his position first for some reason, and THEN lose it...

Maybe it was to get him home. Her mission was to bring Zuko and Iroh back home--she would've failed that mission if he sided with the Gaang, not to mention telling her Dad that Zuko decided to join the gaang does not sound pleasant. In addition, yes Azula isn't cruel for cruelity's sake---for MOST parts. I mean what did she gain by being cruel to the turtleducks?

But she had Zuko captive. She could have brought him home in chains without the risk of losing her position as Ozai's heir.
She's planning something and Zuko's a part of it.

Yeah, In The Awakening when she said "You're going to have to be a little more spicific" I actually shuddered when I thought about all of the crap she was up to with Zuko.

Yiceman: When did she have Zuko captured? Also, I agree she is up to something, I just don't think it's the throne--because she could've just taken care of him back in BSS therefore she doubly looked good to her father.

Uh...when the Dai Li caught him and threw him in the cave ;p
So what do you think she's after? Why did she let Zuko join her?

Oh I forgot about the cave scene! Thank you! ^_^
Because having her brother betray their esteemed uncle seemed fun to her? You know Azula likes to have her fun. XD Or maybe because she knew she needed him to conquer Ba Sing Se--more specifically go after the Avatar and Katara. Maybe she needed him to side with her because she didn't need another enemy. I don't know. Take your pick. ^^

Well...
First of all, it's WAY too risky and stupid a move to do just for fun. She left Zuko alone with Iroh. He could have freed him and gotten away.
And she hardly needed him, even to take out Aang and Katara. She had sixty loyal elite earthbenders at her beck and call.
60 Dai Li > 1 Zuko. Especially since last time she saw him, Zuko wasn't half as good a bender as he is now.

Stupid? As his sister, she knows him very well--like the creators said in the ASN interview, your siblings know your weaknesses; the buttons needed to be pushed to get you to react the way you want them to---she knew what she was doing.
As for Dai Li, where were they during the battle? Nowhere, not even when she was losing in the beginning. Besides who knows Aang and Katara more (from the Fire Nation) than Zuko, who's been chasing them since ep1?

It's still way too much of a risk to take unless she had VERY good reasons.
She knows him? She hasn't spent time with him for three years! Too risky for a petty reason.
The Dai Li? She commanded them to leave, remember? She had two agents with her in the cave, and she gave them the signal to retreat. She wanted to be the one to take out the Avatar.

Three years and yet Azula knew what to say to get him on her side. To someone like Azula, Zuko's very easy to read--and it doesn't help that they're siblings. Long Feng was a person she hardly knew and yet she read him like an open book.
Yes she wanted the Dai Li to leave---but when Zuko joined her, she wasn't complaining that he took on Aang now was she? Can you honestly say that Azula would still win against Zuko, Aang, and Katara? She may be one of the best fighters, as the creators have said, but she's not invicible. The Dai wouldn't have gotten there on time to help her.

Again...it's just too much of a risk! It IS stupid a stupid move. NO one can have THAT much confidence in their ability to manipulate people to make that huge a risk just for a cheap laugh!
Now, why did the Dai Li leave? Honestly, it was just for narrative purposes so we could have a cool Zuko + Azula vs Aang + Katara fight.
But the fact remains...she didn't NEED Zuko's help. She had the Dai Li had she CHOSEN to use them. Reaching out to her weaker brother and asking for his help? Does that seem like something she'd really do? She manipulated him. She needed him on her side for a specific reason. She has alterior motives. She pretty much said as much herself in The Awakening.

And when exactly had she said this in 301?
I can't say one thing that I think, without being contradicted incessantly. Sheesh...
Azula is confident---she needs everything to be perfect and she believes she is (or tries way too much to be); she never even thought about the possiblity that Aang could be alive until she asked Zuko, who hesitated to answer her. And yes, the Dai Li left so we could see a cool fight between the Fire siblings and Aang and Katara; but why did Azula have them leave, aside from the fact that script said so? Because she was confident Zuko would join her!
And this alterior motive, why does it have to be the throne? Why can't it be something new? I mean Azula's unpredictable like you said---I personally never saw the role she would play in the season 2 finale--so why can't her motive be unpredictable as well?

Well her persuits for the throne wasn't my theory...but I am saying that she definitly has some alterior motive for allowing Zuko to join her. Otherwise it's kind of senseless.
