Name: Suzume
Age: 14
Gender : Female
Nation: Air Nomads ; Eastern Air Temple
Bender? Yes; Airbending pupil
Name Etymology
Akiko Suzume (Eng. Suzume Akiko)
Meaning- In Japanese, 'Suzume' means sparrow and 'Akiko' means autumn child. Obviously the 'sparrow' bit refers to Airbenders and flight, and 'autumn child' refers to the Avatar cycle ad the affiliations of elements to seasons.
Physical Appearance
Fair skinned and silvery-green eyed, Suzume is slight in frame. Being an Airbender, she is light on her feet, but Suzume is fairly above average in terms of speed. She has mousy brown hair that fully covers her head, as she has yet to earn her arrows. Her smile is sarcastic. She is pretty tall for her age; about 5' 7". Half of her hair is pulled back in a bun held up with a bracelet made up of wooden beads ,like the necklaces of the elders, although some messy pieces fall out; the other half is left free.
Clothing/Armor
Everyday Clothing (Starting from the bottom layer)
- a dark, orange-red, long sleeved, close-fitting shirt, ending at the wrists
- a yellow, long-sleeved lace up tunic that has flowing sleeves
-a cloth short-sleeved orange jerkin
- poofy yellow pants, just below knee length
-(the same shoes that Aang wears)
Armor (Just for the heck of it..heheheh...) Although the Airbenders are generally passive in nature, they were not beyond insight into the danger of the war. Insightful enough to understand their obligation to protect the future, the air nomads required their still-learning pupils to wear armor if they were to fight alongside the masters. The armor was made with interlocking wooden links, as opposed to metal, which only the Fire Nation manufactured. Each set of armor is individually crafted, and is therefore the only one of its kind. Suzume's is like this:
-a paneled headband, beaded
-wooden arm braces with bands around the arm (swirly design!)
-wooden shin braces with bands around the leg (swirly design!)
- paneled stomach/abdomen guard, hinged for comfort
-light shawl (like Aang's), but made of interlocking wooden links
Some random airbender modeling the armor-
Here-Sorry it's so messed up; it got weirded over in transition and I hurried.
Weapons
The Airbending monks have never approved of weapons, or fighting, at the Eastern Air Temple, but with the impeding war looming, the students have been taught in the combative arts. No Airbenders carry weapons within the walls of the temple, merely because it is against the nature of the Airbenders to be aggressive. Suzume does, however, carry the traditional tool of Airbenders; the glider staff. Suzume usually flies with Kimochi, but she loves to fly by herself, as well. Her glider is made of cherry, with red cloth retractable wings, the red bordered with a small line of a golden color.
Personality
Pros -Slightly sarcastic, but with a good sense of humor, Suzume is a stoic friend, loyal to the end. She loves to read scrolls from the library of the temple, and to dust off old forgotten tomes. She is therefore a bit of a brainiac, which can get her in trouble sometimes.
Cons- Suzume sometimes can't hold her sarcastic tongue and biting remarks. She's also a bit too disdainful sometimes; in other words, she can be really fun and outgoing at times, but other times is too mature for her own good.
History
Suzume has grown up, like most of the young monks, not knowing where she comes from or who her parents are. As a child she lived in the Western Air Temple, but eventually the capacity was at its limit and the Eastern Air Temple was erected.
At the age of six she selected her bison, Kimochi. She chose him for his happy nature and his ability to understand and analyse her own mood as well of the moods of others around him. He also has, like many other bison, an innate judge of character. However, he can be a little grumpy, and sometimes holds a grudge. Suzume and Kimochi are inseperable friends, and work very well together, from winning games in Bison-Ball to watching the sun rise from a small crag that they discovered together.
Suzume's mentor, the female monk Yasu, has watched over her and nine other children in her class since fifty Airbenders immigrated to the Eastern Air Temple when Suzume was six. Suzume and her classmates get along well, but some of them refer to her as the teacher's pet or know-it-all. Yasu is the Keeper of Ancient Knowledge at the Eastern Air Temple, and implanted the thirst for knowledge and learning in Suzume's heart. Suzume's dearest wish, other than to become a master and see the war over, is to become a Fourth Keeper. Classes of Fourth Keepers, through merit, work their way through the ranks of Third and Second Keepers. Although the Fourth Keepers are the lowest ranked Keepers of Knowledge and History, Suzume is determined to one day earn Yasu's rank of High Keeper, the superior of all of the second, third, and fourth keepers.
Because of the brewing war, the Western, Northern, and Southern Air Temples have sent reinforcements to the relatively new Eastern Air Temple. These new recruits have made for a jarring difference in Suzume's and others' lives. There are new faces, new voices, and new names to remember, as well as new classes for Suzume and the other older students to take on combat and the art of fatal Airbending. Only the members of the 5th form of Airbending classes are being taught in these advanced arts; the Air Nomads will need every able Airbender to repel the forces that threaten their very existence.
Suzume is a skilled Airbender, and, as part of the 5th form, the class of oldest students, she is eager and prepared to take her initiation exam(once she turns fifteen) ,the rite of passage into the rank of 'master'.
Airbenders must pass into the first age of maturity, fifteen, to become a Humble Monk, the first stage to full membership in the Airbender hierarchy. The stages, in order, (translated) are Humble, Pensieve, Initiate, Flowering, and the full master: Sentient. However, to her dismay, Suzume may never become a master; the preparations for the war may delay the rite...permanently.
Opinion on the upcoming war
It is against her nature to hurt another, but she knows it is her duty to fight for her loved ones;and she can do it. She also realizes that this was is of the magnitude that she will have to be making decisions and fighting, maybe for her existence. She will never back down while her enemies continue to wreak injustice.
Example of RPG Note: I've never really RPed before. Hehehe.. I just made this character up, so this might stink.
Suzume brushed her hair back habitually as the slender strands fell from behind her ear. She sat crosslegged on a lofty perch; she and her lovable bison Kimochi were precariously situated on a craggy peak, just outside the walls of both Suzume and Kimochi's home; the Eastern Air Temple. The bluff was almost devoid of any animal life, and only a few scraggly bushes and a hanging vine made up the flora. But, Suzume and Kimochi loved it, because it was their own.
Suzume bent further over the antiquated bit of parchment in her left hand; her right was holding the beautifully woven and intricate rope leading to Kimochi's reins; it had been given to her by the monks of the Western Temple when she had been sent as a child, with fifty other Air Nomads, to populate the then newly made Eastern Air Temple. She studied the fading lettering as if she herself were the one living them; stories of the first airbenders and their bison; the chittering lemurs that surrounded the Southern Air Temple; the sounds and smells and thrall of it all. She pondered the lives of her ancestors, as well as those who had come before them. She wondered if her life could be so very different from the lives they had lived over a hundred years ago.
She jolted as Kimochi grunted softly. Suzume brushed her hair back again as she and Kimochi peered over the soft clouds of the horizon. Fingers of light, like smoky tendrils, leaked out from the peaks of mountains. The wispy horizon clouds took on a soft red-pink hue, casting a glowing light on all the world. The very top edge of the mountain tops, an ethereal, shining disc poked its head over the sky line. A luminescent energy washed over everything in the light's path, seeping into every dark spot and giving light to the world. This was Suzume and Kimochi's special spot; and their joy. To watch the world flood with light as a new adventure began. Every sunrise was unique, with its changing hues and mists. Every sunrise was different. Every sunrise gave way to a new day. And no sunrise ever failed to take Suzume's breath away.
