They made the musical episode because Anthony Stewart Head (Giles) wanted one. I think if he didn't push for it, there wouldn't have been a musical episode.
Anyway, I like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I catch the reruns here almost every day. xD Especially the first 3 seasons, they are the best ones imho.
But the fourth season has the episode "Hush" which gives me the creeps every time I see it. I have on old (5-6 years ago) English magazine where that episode was voted for most scary episode.

The musical episode was one of the best eps of the series. Joss Whedon is a genius at everything he writes, including musical theatre. The episode was both funny and poignant, and drew on all sorts of important plot points that had been building up to it, and then brought everything out in the open that people had been trying to hide, thus changing everything that would happen thereafter.

Yeah...if life were a musical...we'd be screwed in trying to hide things. They could have gone about it another way though, for real the musical episode was ok overall, but if they wanted to draw out different plot points they could have done it without all the song and dance, like they have before. The first three seasons were awesome!!! Always kept me on an edge...even for a little kid then I can still remember that...and "Hush" still freaks me out...I had nightmares over that one when it was new...

"Hush" is an awesome episode, I kind of see it as a counterpoint to "Once More, With Feeling." One tells a story basically without any speaking, the other tells a story with singing. It's like opposite extremes, departing in different directions from the normal storytelling mode. But both episodes- like pretty much every episode- work on various levels. Hush seems more serious and dramatic, but the musical can be that way, too. For example, I'm always struck in a big way by the drama of the moment during one of Buffy's songs when her friends realize they pulled her out of Heaven, rather than Hell. Heartbreaking. And of course, Hush had plenty of humor, as well. Still, the overall feel of the eps was different, which is fine. they were both brilliant... though the musical was alot more fun.

I have to admit, even after talking about it on here I've dug up my collection of buffy dvd's and watched both "Hush" and "Once More With Feeling"...makes me just miss the show even more. The musical was funny...althought my first take on it wasn't a thrilled one, once the songs get stuck in your head...thats pretty much it for me.

Oh yeah, I bought the CD of the musical pretty much as soon as it came out. I don' t have any DVDs, but it's nice to be able to listen to the songs whenever I want.
