Hey everyone! This thread is for the 2nd annual Avatar Pumpkin Carving Competition. Here's hoping that this year will be just as great! So if you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or whatever, this is the place to post it!

Yeah, they were all good. My favorite was this one: It looks as though they carved "Avatar" backwards on the other side, so that it reflects on the wall behind it. ;D And the fire adds that extra... um, element, no pun intended. I also love the one w/ Aang in his avatar state, 'cause it works so well with the glowiness. Wish we could have seen the Blue Spirit one all lit up.

Meh...I'll try. But I'll probably just make Avatar: The Last Airbender carved in it. But I want to make a Katara outfit really really badly.
Otherwise, I can't wait to see the entries! ;D

Wow, all the new entries so far are great! It's going to be impossible to decide. Jade's new Halloween layout is cute too, of course. ^.^

Man, I've really enjoyed all the entries. I really dig that one that reflects the logo on the back wall! Here's some progress photos of my pumpkin this year: POSSIBLE SPOILER:I chose the Blue Spirit to celebrate his "poignant" apperance (those who've seen it already will know what I mean) in this Friday's Lake Laogai episode.I thought I'd try a level-carved pumpkin this year. One that's not fully cut through to the inside, but has different layers of thickness carved out of the skin. I started out making a grayscale stencil to determine the layers depths: After punching in the lines I traced the "connect-the-dot" pattern with an exacto blade just deep enough to cut the skin so I could start carving off the first layer: Then I used a variety of wood carving tools to strip out the layers of cold, wet, pumpkin husk. Advantage: Carving a vegetable is easier than carving wood. Disadvantage: Your fingers get really stinkin' cold & achey from scooping out all the juicey layer shavings. One thing that really helped while carving was having the shop light shining through the top hole to show me how much glow I'd be getting. Two hours later (hey, you don't wanna rush art): And finally after four hours we're done. I drilled a small hole in the back and wired up a light bulb & fixture to make it glow. It was much brighter than using a candle especially since I wanted to leave the porch light on above it.

Very impressive work, alternatecoppa. Thanks for joining just to show us the step-by-step process of your pumpkin carving. I've really learned a lot~! Aah, I never understood how people got those "different levels of glow" effect in their carvings...but now I see.
Job well done! Best of luck in the contest!!
