whoa, that podcast thing is AWESOME! I totally love it!
Definitely. They just have so much in common!
You know, we should make a list of all the things Zuko and Mai have in common, and even the things that they don't have the same (like gender XP) still complements one another very well ;D
- - -
oh dang, I just realized how dirty that gender comment sounds >__< sorry guys, I really don't mean it that way!

^ That would take a long time, but here's a start.
Things Mai and Zuko Have In Common: - They grew up rich, privileged, and miserable. - They're warriors. They're even both ninjas. Mai's good with ninja-favored weapons; Zuko's got the moves, stealth, agility, etc. - They both like "playing with knives." - They're introverts, and it takes either another introvert or a very special, patient kind of person to love an introvert. - They don't know the first thing about "proper" romance but just melt in the presence of someone they like. - Neither of them fight out of genuine loyalty or a particular passion for their cause. Zuko fought because he can't fathom ever giving up, and Mai fights just for something to do. Making them both prime candidates for switching sides. - They're picky about who they open up to or reveal their feelings to. - They hate being interrupted by Azula, especially when they're "busy." - They're both first borns (this is more important than you may think). - Zuko is the only thing mai cares about, and Mai is the only thing Zuko enjoys about palace life.
Differences That Compliment Each Other: - Zuko's overly emotional, hot-headed, and prone to losing his temper; Mai is cool, calm, collected, and level-headed. - Zuko never walks away from a fight; Mai is no coward (remember how quickly she leaped into action in "Return to omashu"?), but she steps back when she knows things will only end badly. - Zuko dwells on his problems; Mai buries them and pretends they don't matter. (They both need some therapy in this department.) - Zuko gets raving-paranoid-jealous when a guy so much as looks at Mai; Mai just laughs and enjoys the fun after learning Zuko went on a date with another girl, implying she has more self-confidence than him. Hopefully she will teach him more about this.

karma to you jillrg! I never even thought of some of those!
But I don't know if Zuko is really an introvert. I mean, I know he's awkward around girls, but he's always been very open and expressive with his feelings.

Aaah, so much I agree with in this thread. (Obviously in favor of Maiko.) I think this is my favorite Avatar couple. Like those who have posted before me, they make eachother happy, which is a rarity for both of them.
I also think Iroh would be fine with it. Iroh would want Zuko to be happy, and I'm sure he'd think it was cute, lol. The only thing I can see going the other way is Mai's relation to Azula, but I don't think Mai would force Zuko to do anything, so it doesn't really matter. Since Zuko is the only thing Mai lets herself care about and all.
I love those posters, all of them pretty much, but especially that Mythbusters one, LOL. Maiko needs more love- well, they have plenty, haha, but the fandom... I found a funny explanation of why the fans hate Mai on deviantART, but I can't get the link at the moment. My AMV has a tiny amount of Maiko in it, but not enough to make it a ship vid. (I have been working on one though, just not enough time....)
I really want to know what the letter Zuko wrote Mai said though. Man, I hope they stay together at the end. The idea of "fire-breathing, knife-wielding, ninja babies" highly amuses me. (Somebody on deviantART said this once, I cannot remember who though. If you know, please tell me.)

Wow, a new person who ships Maiko! Welcome to DH! As for "fire-breathing, knife-wielding, ninja babies", I wouldn’t know where that specifically came from. I’ve see it thrown around a lot in the Maiko fandom and I think it’s within good reason. Mai and Zuko would have adorable kids and, upon making fun of the Harry Potter epilogue, the staff seems to think so too. But I don't know if Zuko is really an introvert. I mean, I know he's awkward around girls, but he's always been very open and expressive with his feelings. I think Zuko is an introvert. He is by himself much more than he’s around other people and, even though he’s open with feelings, he’s not very good at articulating what he’s feeling. That’s why I feel there are many maikouts: they both have such trouble with words that they tend to be physical instead.

How was that picture making fun of the Harry Potter epilogue?
oh, that's true about Zuko, but you know, we've never really seen him around kids his own age. For three years he was isolated from the rest of the world -- socially. He didn't have any friends, nothing. Now that he's with the gang, and he's over his angst fest (hopefully) he seems to be more sociable than originally thought. It's true he has a hard time articulating his feelings, but I think most people have that problem, but that doesn't neccesarily mean they're introverted.

Watch this and you will understand. Well, it’s true that Zuko really didn’t have the chance for social interaction for a long time but, still, whenever he is presented with said chance he’s very awkward. I guess it doesn’t really matter (well, to me) that Mai and Zuko are introverts because their social awkwardness is more focused. Zuko has trouble articulating his feelings and Mai has trouble letting herself feel anything. They help each other with that because Zuko brings out the real Mai and Mai loves him despite his dorky tendencies.

I think the key is that introverts can be alone without being lonely. Like Iroh said, "... or just stay in your room and sit in the dark- whatever makes you happy." We don't use that alone time only for angsty brooding, though. We *need* to be alone; my friends and mom who are extroverts are almost afraid to be alone, and when I say with no malice intended "Leave me alone," they take it as an insult because they can't imagine themselves saying something so horrible to someone.
Both Mai and Zuko are clearly not the party animal types, and they prefer to be alone... especially when they're alone together. And it's good that they've both found somebody who understands that need. It's why Mai knew her kiss in "The Awakening" was enough to comfort Zuko and knew without him telling her that when he's worried, he prefers to be alone and not have someone following him around trying to make him feel better (I don't know about anyone else, but I find that so annoying). She probably feels the same way.

really? that's so interesting. Indeed! Also, look guys, some fanart where Mai is awesome and supports her boyfriend. I dunno if I want Mai to join the Gaang (although I think she could have some hilarious interactions with them) but I agree with the artist’s sentiments. Mai does emotionally support Zuko a great deal and I think she would also do so physically if he needed it. Infact, a Mai/Zuko tag battle is something I’ve wanted for a very long time.

Oh, that's really nice, I like the concept a lot. A tag battle sounds awesome, but the only way I can imagine it coming about is if it's Zuko & Mai vs. Azula & Ty Lee, and I don't want it to come to that though, you think those four would ever spar together just for old times sake? Ha, I could see that, though I think the teams would be Zuko & Azula vs. Mai & Ty Lee, just because when they're in action, that's how they usually seem to split up ^^

I don't have a problem with Zuko facing Mai in battle. Not uncommon. Might have Batman/Catwoman vibes, you know?

though, you think those four would ever spar together just for old times sake? Maybe. They don’t really have time now for training sparring (like Katara, Aang, and Toph in "The Runaway") but I can see Azula sending some of their Dai Agents on them and they fight to escape. Also: Zuzu missed his Mai.

That would be kind of cool. But I thought that BM and CW never ended up together?
question: Ali Wildgoose, she's part of the writing/drawing staff for a:tla, isn't she?

That would be kind of cool. But I thought that BM and CW never ended up together? They had a daughter, the Huntress, in one continuity. Does that qualify as "together"? An enemy with romantic vibes- another way Mai would fulfill a role commonly given to Katara in fanon (and, once again, thanks entirely to American Dragon Jake Long).
