Yes, but she's making sure she'll never lose him again. The 3+ year banishment must have been very hard on Mai and Zuko. I doubt if they were boyfriend/girlfriend(a little young) but they cared, especially if you count the childhood tokens of affection they exchanged. That was to be part of the "Going Home Again" comic but was cut due to lack of space.
She obviously never looked at another guy and Zuko was stuck on a ship with a bunch of men for 3 years. I feel certain he thought about Mai when he was alone. He was focused on the avatar but I'm willing to bet he often had thoughts of Mai and of Ursa too.
So when Zuko had to leave again, Mai was most likely devastated. She talks about himripping her heart out and her uncle tells Zuko that he broke her heart. So Mai must have expressed sadness and even talked about her feelings with her Uncle. That's pretty big for Mai at that point.

Sure, why not? In a story I'm writing they have 2 daughters(Keiko and Emiko) and a baby on the way. The third child will be a son and I'm going to have them call him Roku. It shows Zuko's respect for avatars in general and that side of his family. It's an indirect nod to his mother as well.

That sounds neat. It's a good way for him to name someone in honor of his mother without directly using her name. Plus the respect for Avatars things is good (and Zuko-ish) too. It's interesting to hear people's ideas about the relationship between Mai and her uncle. He seems so ruthless to the prisoners, but it's obvious he cares about Mai ("You broke my niece's heart"). I guess he's just one more complex, realistic character in a show full of them. ^-^

Yeah, Mai's uncle seems very protective of her. I'd love to see how he would react to Zuko as Fire Lord. He was so quick to show respect and reverance to Azula, and she was just the Fire Lord's daughter. For some reason, I see him totally dissing Zuko and Zuko just accepting it.

Hi.
Um, I'm new but would like to express my love for the Maiko ship, and my passion for Avatar in general. Also to sprinkle English glitter, as my Aussie friends put it. What do you guys talk about?

Welcome fellow Maiko fan. We are few in number on this board.
What do like about the Mai/Zuko relationship?

I think the most attractive factor of the relationship is that they make each other better people. Zuko brings out a happy, passionate side of Mai (which we should've seen more of) rather then her usual I-Don't-Care-I'm-Bored facade. Mai is also a calming and good influence on Zuko, as I strongly believe that Zuko wouldn't of betrayed the FN, if it weren't for her stable presence. This ultimately secured his place as Fire Lord.
Also that they have (or just Mai) had a crush on each other since they were children, really does it for me. I just like the idea of Zuko coming back to her after three long years.
Few in number? I'm sure there are loads of people on the Zutara board, right?

Actually, people here seem to love Zuko/Song and Zuko/Toph a lot.
And yes, they do make each other better people. They push each other.
The "Going Home Again" comic tells us that Zuko returned the crush which is adorable.
The fact that their bond lasted after 3 years of separation is an indicator of how strong it is.

Hey Firelady Mai, I know its late but welcome to the forums and the maiko thread. I ship Maiko but ironically when I'm online I usually end up in the zutara thread.
I had forgotten all about this comic ( I've been away from avatar for a while) but it remind me why I love Maiko cause even after being away from each other for about 3 years they were able to laugh and enjoy each other almost and if only a couple of weeks had passed and not 3 years.

I think the most attractive factor of the relationship is that they make each other better people. Yeah, that's what I like most about Maiko too. Zuko helps Mai care and Mai helps Zuko chill. They pull each towards the middle. Plus, it's cute that they're both very anti-social people but care so much about each other. Also, this is really late but welcome to DH!

Hey everyone, I'm new here.. and this thread hasn't been posted on for a few months I think... Anyways, I adooree Maiko. Which is somewhat ironic, considering that the first episode I saw when I really got into AtLA was The Southern Raiders, which is the "ZOMGITSZUTARA" episode. Anyways, Maiko is like the best ship/couple ever, and I'm too lazy to otherwise explain why I support it at the moment. I shall be back!
