I had considered making this two separate topics, but considering the fact that they both have to do with things that tick people off, there would be no real gain by making two topics. So this is the final result. List your pet peeves, rant about anything specific, or do both. I don't really care. I'll start off with a rant.
I've never understood why people claim to be fans of something, and then get their joys out of senselessly bashing the main character for no other reason than "I wanna be unique! Wah!" Well, unique you may be, but in the end, it just makes you look like a jerk with a serious desperation for attention. Without pointing fingers at anyone specific, I find this to be extremely common in the fandoms of Avatar and Fullmetal Alchemist, even more so in Fullmetal because the main character, Edward Elric, is the subject of a great amount of fangirl attraction.
Now these people that I mentioned before, they go about this knowing one thing, fangirls are very easy to annoy, and if ticking people off is someone's goal, said fangirls are usually the targets of this indirect bashing. There's no simpler process, right? Intervene in a thread or chat full of fangirls, and start dumping on the character that the discussion's about. And if the fangirls respond, no matter how calmly(or violently), just tell them they're "taking a stupid fictional character too seriously".
And with Avatar, the very opposite applies, it's usually some sort of fangirl who bashes the main character with the rationale that they get more screen-time than one of the "bishies", in this case, usually Zuko. So not just one group's to blame here, it can be a fangirl, an anti-fangirl, or any other fandom stereotype.
And getting back to my original point, the worst part of this is that the efforts for attention usually pay off, some of the most popular and praised members of any major fansite are the ones who spend half of their posts bashing the main character and talking about how "overrated" they are, or "they have too many fangirls" or "this other character deserves WAY more screen-time". It's @#%$ing annoying, so either back up your hatred with some valid reasons, or leave the fansite entirely.
And on a related note, hating a character for shipping purposes is even worse, and I don't even need to elaborate on why, so just stop it.
