Alright.. I know the general age group is younger than 18, which is the legal age to buy cigarettes, but I am proposing a challenge to those of you that might have picked up the dirty habit.
I have been a smoker for 23 years.. Yes, longer than most of you are alive. I have never felt the urge to toss the dirty habit until recently. With hard work and determination, I have gotten myself down to 5 cigarettes a day and I am finding those last few cigarettes to be difficult to kick.
My goal is to have tossed the yucky habit by Easter Sunday.
I am urging anyone here, that is a smoker to join me in my quest for fresh air. We can be one another's support system and give that push we might need. We can do this together!

I urge you to keep your goal girlunderglass. Just a word of advice that I mentioned on the Rant Thread:
Don't become one of these smokers who go all b*!@&y on the world just cause they couldn't get their fix.
It is weak willed for one who is giving up a diffcult and clingy addiction.
And it is VERY annoying.
That's my pep talk.
Go for it!

Thanks guys.. I'm so ready to do this. It's been difficult being my husband is a smoker and shows no signs of wanting to quit. As of January 1st, I made a rule of no more smoking in the house- hoping that would at least get him to cut down. It's helped, but only when he's at home. Since then I have repainted the house, steam cleaned the carpets, shampooed the rug and washed all the window treatments to get rid of any signs of smoke. So far it's been a huge help to me. I have a total of 7 packs left. I do not intend to buy another pack ever again. Hopefully I won't even smoke those.

Good for you! I just have one piece of advise; Don't go cold turkey! It almost never works. I have seen it done so many times, and its not pretty. There are all kinds of support groups out there, some states even have quit lines. And if you do happen to "fall off the wagon" don't beat yourself up it happens to the best of us.

Thanks Kitsune. New York does have a support system state wide. I am taking this slowly and cut down even slower. I had tried a while back the drug called Chantix, with my husband. It made me not want to smoke... but it also made me have bad dreams and generally feel as if I was going insane. I lasted about a week on that. lol I'm certain about it this time... I have taken since the New Year the chance to work myself down to the 5 cigarettes a day. 13 days to kick those last 5 is not unreasonable. I'm ready.

My dad used to smoke a lot too, he quit awhile ago, about in 2003. I don't know how he did it, but he did. I could ask him for you if you need any more advice on getting rid of those last few packs by throwing them away.

My dad quit chewing when I was born. He quit cold turkey, but I don't think he chewed for 23 years. I'd try the patch or gum or something, because otherwise, it's going to be hard. I'd also try smoking only 2 or 3 one day, then go back to 4 or 5, then do 1 or 2, then 3 or 4... might be easier to cut down in waves. But I don't really know. I'm only 15.

My parents quit smoking before I was born. Or rather, they quit because I was born.

^Same with my grandmother. She quit because my sister was six and my brother three and I was on the way. Apparently, my sister just kind of stared at her smoking one day, then said something "very profound" about not wanting her baby sister to get sick because of it. I think this story might have been exaggerated by my grandmother >.<Anyway, good luck! It's really awesome that you're quitting after all these years.

I could ask him for you if you need any more advice on getting rid of those last few packs by throwing them away. I wish it was that easy I would have tossed them years ago. I have quit before- actually not all that long ago, when I had to have a kidney replaced. I think I was stunned into quitting- not that I 'm asking for anything like that to happen ever again- to me or anyone. A lot of you mentioned those around you quitting because the birth of children. Sadly I did not quit while pregnant or after they were born (It's a long story, but a NICU nurse said the mos incredibly stupid thing to me and it was convincing enough not to quit). It always bothered me that we smoked in front of my children. Even the slightest change of stopping in the house and both kids can smell it strongly if someone went outside to smoke.

^ GUG, I really hope you complete your goal by Easter. Obviously, giving up something that has been a habit for so many years is difficult but you have my full support. The main reason I want you to give it up besides you being an awesome person is because all the damage smoking can do. I don't want you to have to deal with anyone of the long-term effects of smoking.

GUG, I really hope you can quit the habit. I'm rooting for you! I'm underage, never smoked, and the rest of my family doesn't smoke, but I'm around so much of it just in public places. You're doing a great thing for yourself, and an even greater thing for others. Gooooooo GUG!

GUG, if all else fails, I can tie you down to a chair and blow the cigarettes up with my friends intrawebz-bomb-making-techniques.
