Okay, so it was another disappointment. Hopefully the season will pick up. Don't get me wrong- the Roku/Sozin stuff was way awesome (young Roku=hot!), I loved all of it. But the stuff outside of that was just...weird. I mean, first of all Aang wasn't even upset that Sozin left Roku to die. That was a really disturbing scene to me.
Then the part with Zuko and Iroh seemed really...is scripted a good word? It made no sense at all. I mean, it's a relief to hear Iroh talking, but come on. Iroh got out- and he delivers a letter? And what happened to the silent treatment? He's suddenly talking to him? Zuko has proved himself to be unworthy of trust, so why is he giving him this task? And I'd think that Iroh'd be the last to talk about destiny, guess I was wrong.
I hope that Iroh didn't write the letter- Zuko's just assuming. And Iroh's just talking because he wants to say something that will upset Zuko: "The Avatar was your great grand-father on your mother's side." And he should have stopped there. Or maybe, if he did find a way to get out of the cell, he could, as Greg Baldwin said, kick his @ss.
What I liked: The story of Roku and Sozin Aang and Katara can get married! That will make the kid happy.
Things I'm not sure how I feel about: Roku being Zuko's other great-grandfather: it's an interesting bit of info, not sure how it will play out.

If Roku became the avatar, and Ozai became firelord, and If Aang became the avatar also, and Zuko will become the firelord, then i hope later in the season Aang and Zuko will become friends just like Roku and Ozai. Don't you mean Sozin? oops yeah Sozin i mean sry my bad.

What I really don't understand about the episode is the bit where they showed Aang's birth or whatever... that struck me as completely out of nowhere and not directly related to what was going on, but maybe it'll make more sense if I rewatch it. But anyway. I don't think of Aang as related to Zuko. I mean I know it's just sort of metaphorically or whatever, but still. An Avatar is an individual first, with his own mind, his own personality, and his own bloodline. Aang has, as far as I can tell, no biological relationship to Zuko, even if he has a spiritual one. Sort of. The birth of Aang was showed after the death of Roku. It was there to show the end of Roku's story and the begining of Aang's.

Wow, I have to take back what I said about Sokka’s Master being my favorite episode, this one owns pretty much everything. But given all the bombs they dropped on us, I’m not surprised. I also noticed a little better quality of animation, especially at certain parts. I wonder if the “both good and evil within Zuko” extends to Azula. I mean, she had the same ancestors, but obviously, her personality overrides that. I wonder if that’s what Ursa meant by “Remember who you are.” Was she grooming her son for this task?
I also couldn’t help but giggle at the mention of a “Court Painter”. Actually, it was more of an evil-fangirl chuckle.

I guess it's just with all the revelatory stuff going on about how everyone was related, it almost seemed like they were trying to suggest Aang was actually biologically related to someone from the Fire Nation, which I don't believe at all. And since I was rejecting that as what the point of the scene was, I sort of... blanked on any simple, obvious explanation for a minute.

Now that I think back after a couple of days (and watching old Avatar episodes), what I don't get is why we didn't catch Roku's connection with Zuko before this episode. In hindsight, it seems so obvious!
The dream sequence... the red dragon good; Roku's dragon red... Ursa and the royal family other than Zuko and Iroh keeping secrets... Azulan ordering Ozai to kill his firstborn son (apparently because of Iroh and Lu Ten, but still suspicious)... Roku not killing Zuko in the Fire Temple... those closest to the Fire Lord distrusting Zuko unreasonably for the reasons we were given before... the Air Nomad Zuko dream... Iroh's constant Avatar and balance speeches to Zuko, seemingly out of nowhere after helping his nephew hunt the Avatar... And Iroh's concentration on Zuko's redemption and seemingly unreasonable fear during season 2 over him... It all makes sense now!
Iroh during the first season was sure Zuko would choose the right path and Zuko's life couldn't possibly be put in real danger. He had too much faith in the boy. Then Zhao blew up the ship and Iroh realized his mistake and became more worried for Zuko, not only because of Zuko's true identity, but because he did care for Zuko as a surrogate son. Perhaps at this time, Iroh realized Zuko not only could get killed, but it wasn't too certain that he'd choose the right path on his own. So Iroh began his personal quest to redeem Zuko so Zuko could likewise redeem the Fire Nation. That explains the troubled look on his face during times in season 2. He literally felt the weight of the Fire Nation on his shoulders. However, it looked like he wasn't in a rush to leave the Jasmine Dragon, though that was probably because he figured it was a good training ground for Zuko (one that Iroh also liked). Like I said before, Iroh never planned for Zuko to cease being a prince. Just cease from being the Fire Lord's son.
Wow... Iroh... I'll never look at you or your nephew the same way again...

i knew zuko was related to aang. i figured it out. My Theory: Roku was the fire lord (whoops) and that was zuko's grandfather. and aang was the avatar. so there you go.

Wait. Hold up. new thought. Iroh is trying to force a destiny on Zuko. After begging him not to let Ozai force a destiny on him. Hypocritical much?

Wait...from what I'm getting is...Is Zuko related to whom exactl...making it sound he not a prince? He's still related to Ozai, and Azulon, and Sozin, which still makes him a Prince of the Fire Nation.

Whoa....you make excellent points! I never thought of that! *kama* Anyway, I thought The Avatar and the Firelord would be about Aang and Ozai was awsome! ;D The friendship between Sozin and Roku was...surprising. 0_o Kind of reminds me of Harry Potter's Dumbledoree/Grindelward friendship only Roku wasn't gay. . Katara: o.o Do they have bathrooms in the spirit world? Sokka: as a matter of fact, they do not. ^HAHAHAHAHA! OMG..... Well, it lood like the avatar CAN be married. *shoves the guru in a closet* And GASP! Zuko's Roku's great-grandson?! Holy freaking crap, that was a major WTF moment! That might also explain Iroh's patience and guidence to Zuko, and Ursa's line to him in Zuko alone. "Never forget who you are." (How can he forget? He doesn't even KNOW! 0_o) XD Five bucks says Zuko will team up with Aang during the invasion! *shot* I wonder what Aang's reaction will be when he fiunds out Zuko is Roku's descendant. And Azula...o.o Does Ozai evewn know? And how does Iroh know?
