I remember being one of the few at first who really believed "Iamthenewiroh" was indeed...the new Iroh. I'm glad that everyone's a believer now. All these questions are great and I hope Greg doesn't say "Ok guys, you ask too much...I'm outta here." Let's remember that he's not stuck to the boards like some of us are and give him a little time to catch up. I think Mr. Baldwin, more than anyone on the cast, likes to geek out a bit just by his admittance of going to Comic-Con every year and not necessarily to be a panel member or have his own booth. There's not really much you can say Mr. Baldwin until an episode where you were involved actually airs correct?
If you know trekkies as well as they're stereotyped Greg then you can kinda know what to expect from some of the more...serious Avatar fans. What exactly is that jewel-eyed monkey statue's purpose in episode 109 The Waterbending Scroll and does it have a greater meaning in the series? If you get stuff like that, God help you. Greg how would you like a thread devoted to questions you can actually answer when time permits?

Nero, well said. Hehe, you make us look like rabid fanboys and fangirls. Though of course we are, with extra rabies. Haha. Anyway, onwards and upwards to "real" questions.
Mr. Baldwin, what would you consider to be Iroh's best trait? I personally think that his sagely persona (wisdom of all things and also his acknowledgment of not knowing certain things), but with certain new "quirks" about him that surge up in the last half of Season II and the first five episodes of Season III, e.g. The Order of the White Lotus and his new body (for some reason until this point we don't know why he does get this new bod'), Iroh seems to have more traits to him. Of all of these (plus others that I may not have mentioned), which characteristic is your favorite and why?

An "Ask Greg Baldwin" thread would be cool. Seriously...I've loved posting on forums since the days when I had a day job and discovered an entertaining and highly effiicient method of wasting company time! And it's a great way to intereact with fans. Hopefully...I won't end up shotgunned by an deranged Iroh fan bent on avenging Mako's honor. Don't laugh...I've actually found a post to that effect. So please don't kill me. I have three dogs, two cats, two kids and one wife. They'd miss me!
As far as what I can say...
I won't divulge ANYTHING about Season 3 that hasn't yet aired. And I do mean anything. I'm happy to discuss episodes that have already aired and other generic questions about "Avatar" and the voiceover world. Heck...I'll even discuss politics and religion.
My favorite Iroh trait? That's easy. He has perspective. Sure...saving the world's important. But so's a good meal and a cup of hot tea. Perspective!

Hey, what's the fun in life if you can't enjoy a little tea? Greg, we're just glad to have you here. I can't believe someone would semi-threaten you! Give me their address, I'll go beat 'em up. All kidding aside, though, it's amazing that you're taking the time out to talk to we, the rabid Avatar fans, and I can't help but be touched by the respect you show us.

^.^ I've been wanting to ask for a long time if you'd give us the story of how the casting company found, among all the people in the nation, the one man who'd devoted decades to sounding exactly like Mako Iwamatsu.

It was an amazing piece of luck on both sides, I think. I received an email from my agent with an MP3 of Mako's voice attached and "sides"...("sides" are the audition script...usually just a few lines). Sound-alike auditions are fairly common. For one reason or another...stars aren't available and an impersonator is hired. I had no idea at the time that Mako was sick and they were actually looking for a permanent replacement. I just thought, "Cool! I can do Mako in my sleep!" I actually recorded the auditon at home and sent it back via email. A week later...my agent called to tell me that I was Nick's top pick. A month later...I went in for the call back. On August 24, 2006 (my 22nd wedding anniversary), I got the call that I was Iroh. And here's a little something I think you guys might enjoy. Go to shadowrun.com/ and download the trailer. The voice on the trailer is mine...electronically altered for some of the spot but mine nevertheless. Enjoy!

Sure...saving the world's important. But so's a good meal and a cup of hot tea. Perspective! Ah, tea. Iroh's favorite thing on Earth. But I have a question: why perspective? Why is that your favorite trait of his? I personally think that his sagely demeanor is his best trait, but perspective...hm, that's a new one. Do go on.

What is "sagely demeanor" but wisdom? And wisdom is really just perspective.
A mystical answer.

And what an excellent story ~ thanks for telling us. Falthor, perspective is the sort of thing you appreciate when you have it. Greg, would you rather start a separate 'questions' thread, or just leave it in here? It's so kind of you to take your time with us.

Hey, Greg! Iroh was awesome in the latest episode... I really can't wait to hear your actual words, though!

Either way ( a new thread or here) is fine with me.
The nice thing about voice-acting is that it doesn't require a huge time commitment. I don't have to hang around a sound stage for fourteen hours...so I have plenty of time to devote to the internet!

Mirriam Webster to the rescue!
wisdom: (n) accumulated philosophic or scientific learning. perspective: (n) the capacity to view things in their true relations or relative importance.
Hm. I see no difference in the two. There is perspective in wisdom, that much is true, as wisdom is really knowledge, and knowledge is always different and/or skewed, but wisdom is definitely not perspective.
EDIT: Also, perspective is most particularly applicable to history rather than wisdom, as wisdom is just an accumulation of knowledge, but perspective is seeing things in their own regard. With history, one must see history through different perspectives but must focus only on one.

Well if you guys want a new thread myself or another staff member can make one and sticky it. I personally would love to see an "Ask Greg" thread to ask questions and have discussions. It's an excellent idea and as long as Greg is agreeable to it, you have this admin's support.

"Ask Greg." Sure! I like it!
Just don't ask any algebra questions.
