The Shadow Mage I agree with you that it's totally the episodes 107 and 108 Winter Solsitice. It was very nice, detailed and the contrast between light and dark was beautiful. Koi doesn't fake her insanity I totally agree about Fang and the first season finale! It's very nice animated and Katara's features were better back then imo.... So I'd say 107/108 and 119/120

I especially liked the Southern Air Temple because of all of the statues that had their own detail. And also, the lighting, while in the temple, and with Zuko's Agni Kai is beautiful.
AND, in I believe it's episode 119, while Iroh is saying goodbye to Zuko as he ventures into the Water Tribe, they do an excellent job mixing the light from the fire and the moon.

The Southern Air Temple gets my vote.
The work in that episode was stunning-- the little details were simply beautiful and not to mention the power and awe that came from it; the Agni Kai and the temple sanctuary scenes.
It still remains my favorite, and most inspirational episode to date.

Most of the first season episodes had really good animation. I wish season two could compare. Season two's quality wasn't as good as it could've been.

"The Deserter". I love this episode so much, and I just feel they really animated it beautifully. If not the deserter, Blind Bandit or Zuko Alone.

The Deserter had some of the best quality animation I can name from Avatar...that and The Waterbending Master had some great animation too. Most of season 1 had gorgeous animation. Season 2 was lacking and most of the time, the faces were drawn a little too chubby, giving them an ultimately childish appearance.

I think Sokka was really well drawn in Bato of the Water Tribe.
But I agree. Second season, everything is pixely and duller. HOWEVER; that may just be ASN's fault for low quality screencaps.

Sokka also looked much more serious in the first season... It's true that they look waaay to kiddish and chibi in the second season. Their faces are round and childish in the second season, but in the first, they're narrow and more mature looking.

Well, SOMEONE needs to step in on behalf of Book 2 (MAN people are harsh on Book 2 a lot more than I thought). I don't mind the style change (though I do wish they'd go back to the style they used at the end of Book 1). Atleast the style wasn't changing every other episode, and the characters don't look peculiar, like in King of Omashu. The colors are more appeasing to the eye. And there were some stylistic improvements between Seasons 1 and 2. VS. His face came out looking better and he looks...well, actually... Aangry. (Ooh, bad...) VS. The anatomy for Aang looks better (actually, Cave of Two Lovers had a good style. I wish they employed that one more often).

Mm, yes, I toke note upon the fact that Cave of Two Lovers did have some good animation. Personal favorites incllluudeeee- ^gotta love the cheesey grin.

This one will admit that COTL did have some fine animation, that it did. However, it kinda slipped after that episode, not as drastically though. By "The Chase" we could see the MAJOR difference in animation. BTW, this one thinks that the glow effect of Aang's eyes and tattoos was better in "The Southern Air Temple" but he did look angrier in "The Avatar State", that he did.

Well, in terms of use of colors and toning, Seige of the North part two excels them all. The red when the moon spirit was in trouble, and Yue's death, where all was grayscale save her blue eyes.
But best animation...hmm...I really enjoyed the cutoffs in City of Walls and Secrets and Appa's lost days. In the Earth King, Zuko's dreams were very nicely done with all of the effects. In the library, everything was very detailed; got to give them credit for drawing all that. In the storm, all of the flashbacks were done well, especially Zuko's, with the lighting. It's so hard to say, as they are all so good. I also liked the lightning in Azula's eye thing.
All the fighting scenes in Avatar are animated very nicely as well.

The Fortuneteller was also heavily detailed; I especially liked how even in the background, the characters were never still, which added a bit of realism to it...it annoys me when the characters in the background are just standing there like idiots.
The Winter Solstice was good, but at times there was this awkward animation in the faces.
I think that The City of Walls and Secrets also had pretty good animation. The best animation yet from season 2 in my opinion.
