Ok I've been thinking about this for awhile. In the episode Imprisoned, when the earthbenders are stuck on the Fire Nation rig, obviously they don't know they can bend metal, but why don't they bend the earth on the ocean floor. I'm sure many of you will say becuase it was to deep, but how about some other answers.

How about...because then there'd be no need for Aang to save them and it wouln't have been such a great episode? ^_^

Well, good point. If Earthbenders could bend the dirt below the water, there'd be no need for Avatars, right? Just get a bunch of them captured by a FN ship going to the FN.

It's possible that they don't even know about the deep ocean floor (I mention 'deep' because I only just now remembered the instance in Serpant's Pass when they walked on a more shallow shelf). Given the time period and the lack of modern technology, the characters in the Avatar world might just believe there isn't a bottom. It would be similar to that 'world is flat/edge of the earth' idea, and if they don't have the means to further explore underwater, then the sudden drop-off of the continental slope could appear to support it.

I know there would not have beena need for episode if the earthbenders bent the earth under the ocean but still, logically that would make more sense.

Maybe only a select group on earthbenders can metal bend. I have yet to see Aang do it, he did wish it. Toph was able to "see" the earth, maybe that made it a bit easier for her. I don't know, but I'm betting that not all earthbenders can bend metal.

the episode was an over exploration of Katara taking charge of both the gang and the prisoners. bending wise I notice that you need to be close to something to bend for example earth...and metal bending seem to be a very hidden talent for earthbenders...note that once you cruch someone spirt...it easy to control them. Let not overthink the obvious...cause your making the citizen more powefull then aang

Several factors come to mind, most of which have already been touched upon. One in particular that I like is that the earthbenders were broken in spirit, and could not muster the will to try to escape.
Another factor I'm thinking of is that it might be more difficult for most benders to bend something they can't feel or see. Katara mentions in "Jet" that she has not bended water she couldn't see, before. (This is not accurate; in previous episodes she bended water out of Aang's lungs, and bended water out of a well pump).

(This is not accurate; in previous episodes she bended water out of Aang's lungs, and bended water out of a well pump). To be fair, Katara may have seen the water in Aang's mouth and bent all of it out in a stream. Also, wasn't the well bending in the pilot episode? I thought we were not sure when on the timeline that could have occured. At any rate, it seems to me an Earthbender needs to either have contact with the Earth or see it to bend some of it. (Toph is obviously the exception as far as seeing goes, but I cannot recall if she ever bent Earth while standing on something...not Earth)

I think all earthbenders can bend metal, but are just not powerful enough. Just like any firebender can bend lightening but if they cannot separarte their yin and yang, they cannot do it.

From what I understood about bending metal was that since it's been altered/purified earthbenders can't bend it. But Toph(and possibly some others) can 'feel/see' earth in the metal that hasn't been altered/purified, so they can bend it.
About bending earth on the ocean floor. Do you think it's possible to bend something miles below you? Maybe(most likily) they can in shallow water, but not when it's that deep.
