Hm.. Yea..maybe.. But i'm sure theres more to the White Lotus than just swordfighting and Pai Sho.
The producers showed us in S1 that the white lotus tile to Iroh was VERY important..so important that he had to stop Zuko from capturing Aang. In S2, we see that it "helps" people of their own..
And the guy that was helping Iroh said.. "Not many still cling onto the ancient ways" ANCIENT?

I think the White Lotus is a giant cross national secret organization. It has no national affinity and does not support any individual nation nor does it plan to. Members from all countries are welcome and they support each other. I believe that the order has a core belief in balance do to the current known members. The order will convey information and help individuals but not any national goal. It keeps balance in itself by not supporting any nation or element above the other allowing it to remain secret and be a place of support and enlightenment for all members no matter who they are.

^ Yeah we all already get a rough idea that its a secret society that helps people from no matter what nation.
We want to know whats its purpose in the Avatar World..

I'm just throwing out ideas, but perhaps it(purpose of the society) is to help the avatar in his/her training? The few times we have seen the group, they have had some kind of proximity to Aang to either guide, protect or teach him. This is also going with the assumption that Iroh is going to be Aangs fire-bending teacher.

Yeah Aang could walk up to Iroh, shove the piece in his face (and almost up his nose) and say *Darth Vader Voice* "TEACHHHH MMMEEEEEE......hehehehhe."

This token is good for one bending teacher. Some restrictions apply. Offer not good in Ba Sin Se.

Ah, kitsuneo, that was great! Karma in uh, half an hour. ^.^ And I agree with Darryl: exactly how ancient are these practices? Do they pre-date divisions by nationality? And finally, I wondered if Sokka's master might have thought Aang already knew about the White Lotus? Maybe he was supposed to learn from Gyatso, but since he departed suddenly, Gyatso never got the chance to tell him? Or maybe he was meant to be told when he reached that 16-year-old mark, and now he has to learn slowly on his own? I get the feeling that you have to grow gradually into eligibility to receive the knowledge, and once you are finally ready to be told, you don't have to be told, 'cause you already know.

The Order of the White Lotus is one of my favorite things about the show, which is really saying something because I love everything about the show, and we know so little about the Order so far. Of course I wonder who is or was a member, how old the Order is, and how many outsiders know of its existence. It does seem quite likely Gyatso was a member, anyway I like to think he was. I wonder if Ursa is/was a member, or if Katara and Sokka's mother and/or father were... And I wonder how many of the royal family of the Fire Nation know anything about it... when we first saw Azula in Book 2, she mentioned people plotting against them. Some might think that was just something she was lying to Zuko about, but I wonder if she was actually talking about White Lotus. I've also recently been wondering if they could be hiding Airbenders somewhere, so it's nice to see that's occurred to other people, as well. And just now while reading this thread... I started to wonder if the Order may have instructed Iroh not to capture Ba Sing Se, years ago...
I very much look forward to learning many things about the past, present, and future of the Order....

I believe that the White Lotus Society exists to form a rebellion against the Fire Nation/Fire Lord. I think it was created so that those who don't believe in the war, help plan how to end it. Iroh, Sokka's Master, Gyasto <-(Maybe), and that other guy we saw in the Desert that helped Zuko and Iroh.
I think this society is very important, and much bigger than we think.

I agree with zutarian4eva. This society is much bigger than what we think. Maybe they have knowledge on how to get into the spirit world. We all have the rumors that Iroh has ventured into the spirit world. Maybe he learned it from the White Lotus.

The Blue Chibi - thanks ^_^ That's a interesting thought but I thought that he halted the assault because his son got killed? I wonder if the Avatar(not Aang) has ever been a member? I decided to look up white lotus on Wiki, seeing how tidbits of the real world sneak into the story sometimes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Lotus

J I decided to look up white lotus on Wiki, seeing how tidbits of the real world sneak into the story sometimes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_LotusI agree that Iroh stopped the invasion od Ba Sing Se because of the death of his only son. He was devastated about it so he couldn't go on. He had also mentioned that he and his men were very tired, so that's another reason why he stopped. I do think that one of the past Avatars have been in this organization. The Avatar is what keeps the balance in the world, that is a reason of the White Lotus. It wouldn't surprise me if this order was founded by one of the past Avatars. It seems that The White Lotus in our world is very similar to the one in the world of ATLA. Both Orders had the some-what of the same intentions, to maintain balance. Although the White Lotus in the world of ATLA is more secret and mystical than the one in our world.

I posted my theory about the White Lotus society in another thread dealing with Iroh:
"I believe that secret society's purpose is similar to the Avatar's purpose i.e. maintain balance between the elements. It's clear that they aren't anti-firebender, despite the crimes committed by the Fire Nation in the war, so they must have loftier goals in mind. Also, the arrangement of the pieces in the White Lotus opening leads to a completely symmetrical formation, reflecting the secret society's purpose: keeping nature and society in balance."
I stand by that theory. I believe that Sokka and co will meet up with Iroh through the White Lotus society and that Iroh will train Aang to firebend.

Well, Kyoshi founded the Dai Li, so an Avatar founding the Order of the White Lotus would be an interesting counterpoint to that. But I kind of have my doubts... Actually I think the Order being something that a group of people from various nations founded together without the knowledge of the Avatar would be interesting... I feel like the Order most likely goes back long before the start of the war, but then again, if they really do exist as a means of doing basically the same job as the Avatar, it would make sense for them to have formed out of necessity, after the Avatar disappeared. Either way, I like the idea that the Avatar won't always be necessary, that regular people (even if some of them are benders) are capable of taking destiny into their own hands, instead of depending on someone else to take care of everything for them. I think that's actually an important part of this series....

Apparently Sokka's master is a member of the White Lotus. From what we learned in season two the White Lotus society helps refugees. Also knowing that he figured out that he is friends with the Avatar he gave them that tile to help them win the war because thesociety could help them find the secret river tht Aang learned about that leads to the palace. Because it is a secret it would be easy to sneak them there. I have a theory that he gave them the tile to help them win the war indicateing that he wants the war to be over. I don't blame him it had lasted for 100 years for pete's sake. Also according to his bio at Nick.com he became sick of battle not to mention he had been around the world so he had seen the effects of the war.
