I think they might start a different storyline, or tell about Aang's kids? Maybe.

I doubt there would be a season 4 because it would distort the plotline... I'm not sure though. I am aware that each season cumulates in the corresponding element, so I believe that with the third season the Fire Nation threat will be resolved. The storyline simply flows naturally in that direction. In my opinion, the book named "air" happened before the war fire nation caused, and the "air" story cumulated in the destruction of the temples and eradication of the Air Nomads. So unless the producers realize that Avatar is a goldmine and decide to stretch the story (which in my opinion would be a bad thing... I mean, I love Avatar and I rejoice with every new episode, but it would be a shame if they ruined the show like that) I think it will end with the Book 3 finale. I may be wrong though...

I wouldn't mind a season 4 with a different story arc. I would want some part of the Aang/Zuko storyline incorporated somehow, though. It would seem weird at first, but Mike and Brian did such a great job with this, so I'm sure they would make us fall in love all over again. I think it would be exciting to be exposed to a new storyline. It is like finding a new fandom to obsess over.

Don't get your hopes up for a good fourth season. I've noticed the seasons have been on a steady decline in quality, in character development as well as an increased number of filler episodes.

I have a hard time noticing the quality of TV shows, movies, or anything. I'm easily entranced by any plot; it's bad acting that gets me. I can hardly ever tell when there's good character development or anything, so any more Avatar will satisfy me.

I envy you. Personally, fillers are my pet peeve. Like the Beach, for instance. Case in point, I rant for hours about the Beach. I'll spare you though.

^ The Beach was character development.
I don't see the quality in seasons going down it seems to be going steady. But I don't see a season four in the future I think it will end with the third.

I really don't think there will be a season 4. If there is, something in this season has to screw up or not go as we planned. Really the only way I can see a season 4 is if Aang fails to defeat the Fire Lord. Then they would have to spend time trying to come up with a new attack plan. I feel it would really only be good for a half a season though. It might get old.
Oh and welcome montenak! =]

I'm sure I'm in the minority on this, but I actually don't want a fourth season. It's pretty clear the writer's intended this to be the end of Aang's storyline, and I want to see some resolution. I also don't think they can carry the story much farther than what they have with the Y7 rating they have been given. Sometimes more isn't better, and I think this is one of those times.
That being said, I would gleefully watch a new series based in the Avatarverse, and I'll be keeping my eye out for the Mike & Bryan's next project...

^^Yeah. I really don't want another season either. I agree that there wouldn't be much if it goes as we expect it to in the end.

Season Four...the elusive muse...the ultimate fantasy for every Avatarian...the dream that no fan would ever want to wake from...

Maybe season 4 could show them all a couple years later and it could show what they've all done after the war's end.(I'm such an Avatard) But really if you think about it, Nick has to tie up all the loose ends from the finale. Otherwise they would get bombed with questioning e-mails from all of the Avatards like me! Plus, I'm sure Nick wants to keep one of its most- watched shows up and running so it will have more viewers.

I guess we'll have to wait and see then. I'm all for a 4th Season of Avatar.
