Both are great in there own way and change characters perception and valve but season two was advance, twisty and mostly unexpected from the theories and thought that could have happen. I like what you are saying here. I agree 100% with you. I like that you mentioned the difference between the two. Kudos to you.

Season two finale had more drama and suspense, I really doubt that season 3 will be able to top this one.

Season 2! So much plot twisting...
That would be awesome if the season threefinale could top it!!! Then it would be the ultimate season finale...

Hmmm...it depends on what you consider "better". Season 2 was much more climatic; because there is a lot more about the characters and story to think about than season 1; where though we didn't know who Azula was (Though maybe we did; we knew she was the fire princess; I'm pretty sure, maybe it was that we just didn't know her name *shrugs shoulders*), that was pretty much it besides what would happen with the Gaang next as well as Zuko and Iroh. Where with season 2, we have what happened to Aang, what will happen to the Gaang in general, what will happen with Azula and Zuko, and you can go into much detail with all of them. Plus we have a better understanding of the possibilities of season 3 and possibly season 4 if there is one; where those two seasons were in kind of a fog for us when season 1 ended. But if I were to say what one I liked overall more, it would be season 1 because to me, the character devlopment was consistent, and though things were unexpected, it made sense with the storyline and character development. Whereas season 2 ending just befoggled me and left me going . To that, I'd say season 1 finale was better. But there are multiple ways to judge the finales; you'd have to be more specific than just "better" for me to go more into depth of what I thought of the finales.

I'd have to say the second one. Because I like all the animation better, the fight scenes are better, Katara kicked butt harder, Toph was there, Aang died(or almost. that was a shocker), the avatar state was cooler and the characters were more developed and it was just cool.

Season 1 for sure. Season 1 was better than season 2 in general, first of all, so it only makes sense that season 1's finale is the superior one. But secondly, when you say finale, you have to look at chapters 19 and 20 and how they work together. In the first season's finale, the two were effortlessly tied together. In the second, everything seemed slapped together really quickly, with some parts of the story just seeming irrelevant. The cliffhanger ending didn't help matters much, either. It's a finale, not a premiere.
Toph gets captured by Xin Fu and the old guy. That's cool, I guess. It's too bad it was pointless, except for an illustration about how metal can be bended, because everything is connected. That could have happened without wasting time on her capture and seemingly immediate escape. Sokka meets his dad. Big deal, he doesn't do anything with him except say "Hi," and get ready to go off and fight before Aang comes back. How very touching. I mean, try developing some kind of central story instead of having each of the characters off on their own, dealing with whatever. As long as people tune in, I guess. =/
Aang's whole deal with the Guru was rushed and incomplete. The representation of how long it took him to open the first six chakras compared to what it actually took, or should have taken, was so disproportionate. I mean, he has to confront some of his most terrifying inner demons and darkest fears. And he just dispells them with a snap of his fingers? It shouldn't have been that simple. I've written paragraphs and paragraphs about this subject before, but I don't think anybody can grasp them.
Season 1's storytelling was excellent. It's Aang & Co. + Water Tribe v Fire Nation the whole way through, with the small sidestory of Zuko/Iroh v Zhao. And there is a definitive, resounding finish that leaves you satisfied. Season 2's plot is so screwed up and all over the place that you're struggling to enjoy it while you're watching it. There are many different conflicts within the Season 2 finale, and it just bogs you down. Start off with Aang v Aang, then Azula v Long Feng, Zuko v Azula, Zuko/Azula v Aang & Co, Toph v Xin Fu/old man (for the life of me I can't remember his name - Master Yu maybe?), and add in the Zuko x Katara and Aang x Katara romantic themes, and you're struggling to keep up with what's going on. You might be able to understand it fine, but when you're trying to evaluate it, and think critically about it like many people on this board do not do, you can see that the first was a better work.
And I had animation beefs, too. Honestly, I like the first season's animation style better than the second. Just 1 animation studio (except for, perhaps, Bato of the Water Tribe, that episode always bugged me) responsible for everything felt so much better. The colors were more blended and subtle, not vibrant like they are now. I liked the older feeling visually. The character designs were better. They had a lot more to animate in the season 2 finale. Bigger battles, more characters, bigger landscapes (Ba Sing Se is huge), etc. But bigger isn't always better.
For example, the battle between Zuko and Zhao in the season 1 finale, where everything was black and white, except the fire, which was in color, was awesome. The two best battles in the series' history have been better Zhao and Zuko, the first in episode 3, the second in episode 20. Zhao was such a cool villain, too. His backstory wasn't as good as Azula's, and he didn't have as much depth, but he was ruthless, and the way he chose to end his life spoke volumes about his character. But back to the battles; just because lots of fancy bending goes on and everything's so shiny doesn't mean it's better. You have to look at the choreographing, as well.
Speaking of awesome battles, you can't forget where Aang controls the huge water spirit and blows away an entire Fire Nation fleet. That's just amazing. The music playing in the background and the dynamic of Water Tribe people bowing down and Fire Nation people standing up in defiance really made you feel that Aang's actions had a sense of justice to them. You don't get that clear feeling in season 2's finale. Your primary emotions are anger at the villains and sympathy for the heroes. That's obviously because the villains have won, but having a sense that something has been done right is important in any sort of finale. Cliffhangers don't suit finales well.
I could go on forever, because Avatar is a show that I really enjoy. But season 1 set the bar so high, and season 2 fell a little short, in the finale department and as a whole. I won't be satisfied with whatever they decide to come out with, because I love the show and want to see it live up to the expectations I developed in response to the gloriousness (if that's not a word, I don't care) of its first season.
