Katara stayed for storyline reasons. Toph went by herself for storyline reasons. I just hope she returns. Yeah I think it was played like that for irony reasons, since Aang and Sokka were the ones who wanted to stay in Ba Sing Se and help the Earth King and both Katara and Toph wanted to leave.

I figured it out dudes! Toph didn't stay with the earth king, because she can't read strategy charts!!

Toph couldn't have stayed behind and helped plan for the invasion. She's only twelve! And also Ichiroga's reason, as blunt as I might sound.

I think because since Katara isn't blind she can do more to help out.

thats a good idea... but i still think sokka should have stayed with the king. hes the one who actually invented the invasion on the day of Black sun. but toph could have stayed too, and visited her mother.

too late to argueing about what could have been unless you see if the change could change the plot.

Toph didn't stay with the Earth King for the sake of the plot.

kind of late question but does anyone know why Katara and Sokka didn't go with aang to see their dad and Toph stay to "Watch over the king"? I mean couldn't she of visited her mother and still stayed with the king? that is a good point i mean she would still be in the earth nation it would not be that bad

yeah, probably. but since Long Feng is gone, the Earth King probably needs a new advisor by his side 24/7. though i thought Sokka would stay behind, cuz he is more of the strategist... I must watch the episode again but Im mildly dissapointed that Katara wasnt with the Earth King when Azula & Co first arrived at Ba Sing Se. I dont think that anyone imagined Toph was in a position to advice the Earth King. Aside from the obvious plot device, I think it was more important for Sokka to meet up with his father and learn the overall strategy for the invasion which included the Water Tribes. With all due respect to General How, as crucial as the armed forces of Ba Sing Se were to the Invasion Plans, their late entry into the war meant there was no real chance of any of them taking on the role of "Supreme Commander of the Allied forces" as it were. That de facto role was Hakoda's and it makes stratgic sense that Sokka was sent to learn about the overall plans for the attack from him.
