Why is it the "White Lotus"? Not the "Purple Hyacinth" or something?

*ahem* I believe I JUST POSTED THAT.
Unless you are asking why the original Chinese government called it that, in which case Google might be of service.

Yes, I was asking why it was originally called the "White Lotus" and not some other flower or item. And why it would be called this in the Avatar universe, as well. Beyond the fact that there was some society of that name in China, which has been mentioned on this board numerous times before now.
Basically, does anyone think it may have specific relevance to the Avatar universe and, if so, what?

Um... It seems if you wipe out the air temples it wouldnt do any good because they are Air NOMADS after all... Dont NOMADS wander? How can they be called Nomads if all they do is stay in the temples... What about the ones wandering in the water tribes? Wandering in remote isolated parts of the earth kingdom? I would say fire nation, but their tatts could be a dead give away... And b4 Aang ran away, the head monks said they feared war was upon them, this was clear when the fn made its first earth kingdom colonies that roku saw... Years later he died... 12 years later the air monks feared the fn would come for them, so Aang was told to be the avatar early... So, thats more than enough time to have children airbenders sent out... The children could have grown up with no tatts, and their children no tatts and so on for 100 years... So no one has seen an airbender... But how do you tell if someone is an air bender? bending air... and tatts... Aang is the last, old gen airbender... With tatts and stuff... And the O.W.L. is good with keeping secrets, so if the airbenders are with them, their bending could be a secret... Or if there are airbenders in the earth kingdom and all around, and they dont know that they are airbenders, and everyone says they are all dead, why should they have any reason to try and bend air... They know they cant bend rock or water and surly not fire... Well, thats all thats left, so they must think there just a normal person...

^^That's true. The Air Temples were probably just base points for travels. Except it seemed like Aang and Gyatso were at the SAT for a while, but we only saw tiny pieces of his memories.... so I really don't know. As you get older you probably start to wander more, then when your very old, you stay at an air temple and care for the younger children? It doesn't really matter - I believe there are airbenders out there still and the White Lotus is probably in on this knowledge.

Beyond the fact that there was some society of that name in China, which has been mentioned on this board numerous times before now. Basically, does anyone think it may have specific relevance to the Avatar universe and, if so, what? The lotus flower has been considered a spiritual flower for centuries. It represents enlightment, rebirth, open minds, and open hearts. And doesn't this quote sound familiar? In relation to men, the lotus is the symbol of the self-producing soul which, during manifestation immersed in material life as the lotus seed is embedded in the mud of lake or pond, is wakened by the warm rays of the spiritual sun, and grows upward through the world of illusion (symbolized by water) to blossom in the free air and sunlight of truth.www.experiencefestival.com/a/Lotus/id/108525

I like the theory of the White Lotus in the first post a lot. It's well thought, and, sure, I would love the see surviving Air Nomads.
One thing I wanted to comment about is the title of the show. While the American version is subtitled "The Last Airbender", in other parts of the world it has a different subtitle. I've seen "The Legend of Aang" and even "War of the Elements".

I wouldn't doubt that were in the White Lotus at some point, but it's been said time and time again that currently Aang is the last airbender.

I don't think that there are anymore Air Nomads left. Because the Fire Nation was probably very quick in attacking the Air Temples, and would probably have spies there. And even if some Air Nomads escaped the attacks, I'm sure that they would have been hunted down. What some of you don't see is that Sozin wanted every single Nomad dead, and he would go to any lengths to do it, which is why he deployed an entire army to achieve his goal!
And even if they survived how would the Order of the White Lotus have the facilities to re-build a society? Now, from what we've seen of them, they seem to be a very sly group. Unless you expect probably 50 Air Nomads to be crammed into that florist which Iroh & Zuko went to, or in the attic of Piandao's castle. I don't know where you expect them to be. The gaang have been round almost all of the world, and the Fire Nation are there where they haven't been.
So, Air Nomads are dead and the Avatar world is doomed. Huzzah!

The Air Nomads wouldn't have to be in hiding. They could be living as regular people, their ancestors placed in towns around the EK or something by the WLS. They don't have to be in the custody of the WLS to be members.

If they were in hiding in EK villages, etc. That would make it more likely for the Air Nomads to be found out, and their true identities revealed.

^^I don't think it would as long as they didn't openly Airbend. Like Haru wouldn't have been caught if Katara didn't make him Earthbend.

I really want to see some airbenders, or at least Air Nomad descendants that survive. But Mike & Bryan said clearly( perhaps too clearly) that Aang is the last airbender. I hope they didn't want to gave any hints to suprise us in the end. I would be dissappointed if the show doesn't reveal anything about future of Air Nomad society.
But if there are surviving Air Nomads, it is very poosible that they hid and protected by WLS.

They could still be around. With hair and no Tatts. or maybee the W.L.S had the nomads not teach the young ones how to airbend. Maybee it will be up to Aang to find them and help rebuild his society. If they where to do a fourth book (Air) it would be cool to see Aang have a whole season to find and unite the air nomad decendents and fight the last remaining FN soldiers in the EK. That would be a sweet end to the Aang story. But we all know this is the last book M & B if you change your minds about a 4th season this would be a cool ending

The only problem I have is this You can't discriminate against something that doesn't exist...
My thoughts for this is that Guru Pathik will turn those 'Air Walkers' into Air Benders
