This was a wonderful episode and has shown me why Kuvira is possibly my favorite antagonist yet! Her motives feel so right, so natural that it takes later episodes to even begin showing why she shouldn't be in power. Yet when you look at what goes on around her... How can she not step up?
The late earth queen was horrible, the new prince doesn't seem any better, bandits run rampant, other nations are looking to establish control... I can see why Kuvira would act as she has.
Where there is chaos she brings order. Where there was once a broken country she provide unity. Where there is weakness she brings strength. How can one not want to cheer for her?

Aaaaaaah, omg, Toph! So wonderful seeing her again, and whoever provided her old lady voice did an awesome job. I have to say though, seeing her wear her old ATLA outfit is kind of disconcerting. I mean, I get it from a design point because it's iconic, but seriously, who wears the exact-same style clothes they wore as a 12-year-old? Even Aang's adult clothes were somewhat modified.
Anyway, it was shocking to hear her say that Su and Lin didn't really pick up metalbending like she had -- like, the city of metal and swinging around like Spider-man/Attack on Titan soldiers isn't amazing enough? I have been carefully avoiding this season's spoilers since I'm watching these eps so late, so I reallyreallyreallyreally hope that Toph will get into some metalbending fights later on and show what she's talking about.
Kuvira, oh man. I totally see where you're coming from Nashk, especially with how the previous (and current) royalty has failed the Earth Kingdom, and why Kuvira would fight to hold onto her position of power. But at the same time, how she dealt with that little village in the first ep -- basically abandoning them in their time of need until they obeyed -- and now these rumors of what happens to the villages that don't comply, man it's like the Majora's Mask theme whispering in the background. She's not in it for the good of the people, she's in it for herself and growing her army.
But I love seeing how this develops, like, maybe she originally was in it for the people but now things are starting to twist and corrupt, and I just sense such a twinge of the old Fire Nation and Sozin's desire to spread out and "share" their technology and etc. It's just interesting seeing it from this side of the timeline, rather than starting at the end as just another Big Bad to be overthrown.
As for the boys, Prince Wu and Mako continue to float at the top of my favorites list?? Maybe I just find joy in Mako being uncomfortable, but their scenes always make me laugh. Also, is it just me, or has Bolin lost weight? He doesn't seem as beefed up as he used to, although I guess maybe that's 'cause he's been on a train and so isn't exercising as much as he used to.
Almost forgot, sudden appearance by Eska! Yay. And was that Zuko's daughter at the coronation too? Aww. She better have a speaking role later on.
