I guess it's time to open discussion on the brand-new first episode of The Legend of Korra!
The premiere debuted this morning on korranation.com, and let me say...it was amazing. Korra's kicking butt and taking names, and the quality and style of the artwork were breathtaking. Everything - the music, the animation, the storyline - seemed to come together in a better way than I could have imagined. And I love the new characters.
What are your thoughts?

This was a great episode. I really enjoyed Korra as a character. Tenzin's children are adorable and hilarious. And Chief Bei Fong is exactly how I would imagine Toph as an adult. I'm really liking Republic City and can't wait to see how the conflict between benders and non-benders turn out. Judging by how those benders were treating that shop owner, I can definitely see why the benders have a bad reputation.
I was a little unsure about how the episode would feel since the previews showsed it was quite different that ATLA. This sereis is of course more modern and all the artwork and even the music seems much lighter. However, I think it works great. Everything seems to fit very well, and I really like the lighter more upbeat feel, and I think it fits well since this is the air book.

[Wow first post in almost 3 years]
What a great introduction to the new series! I think the new series is a great reflection of how our world would be like if integrated with bending (inequality, pro-bending, etc..).
Not sure how I feel about the change in the Avatar world with technology though (electricity, cars, radios). Doesn't feel the same, the Avatar world is always a rural place in my mind, but it would be nice to see a change I suppose.

Yeah, I think the technology is the hardest part for me to adjust to as well. I just found the old 1800s Asia thing so charming, I always have. On the other hand, I'm sure the entire world isn't that way. I'm not sure if Bryke ever confirmed anything about the series leaving Republic City at any point, but if Korra explores a little like Aang does, there are probably lots of villages/areas that look like the old Avatar-land. The South Pole didn't look too urban anyhow. Then again, considering that the Fire Nation had airships and giant mechanical drills and whatnot in the original series, I'm not sure why the technology in Republic City feels so foreign to me O.o.

Did anyone catch the name of Tenzin's Sky Bison? It sounded like Miu or something, but I'm not quite sure.
Anyway, this was a great start to the series! Definitely on par with the Boy in the Iceberg, although I still think the Avatar Spirit and The Awakening did better as openers. But this is more of a pilot, so I'll cut it some slack. Speaking of episode titles, anyone else notice that we're two episodes in without an episode beginning with "The" :0 now that's a nice change of pace!
And I really, really liked the music. The Track Team did a woderful job as always, and while I miss the epicness of their previous works, these new tracks have a really nice jive to them that I can't get enough of. Plus, vocals! Can't wait to see where else this season goes!

Not gonna lie, I was tearbending all over my keyboard through the first half of this. Seeing Gran Gran Katara, and everything that that implied, was thoroughly breaking my heart. It wasn't until Korra was on the boat that I finally was able to focus on her story/side of things. As such, I like her. Her personality is strong without coming across as annoying, and it's interesting how she's different from Aang, rather than the previously vague statement of 'complete opposite.' Her voice acting (and frankly most of everyone else too) fits wonderfully.
Republic City is gorgeous, and I'm going to like seeing it further explored. I especially like that homeless guy with his sparkling bush; I hope we'll see him again. ^^ The metalbending cops are amazing in motion, and I love Chief Bei Fong. Tenzin and his family are wonderful too, especially Meelo, but good lord that child is a handful! I think that's what I like most of all -- the kids, teens, and adults act like actual people their age rather than a cardboard person cut out in various sizes and shapes. It's refreshing.
Technology-wise, I think I've gotten more used to it. With the Asian/1920's style of music and clothing to go along with it, having the radios and cars and stage microphones feels more natural than it did framing it with ATLA in mind. Although I'm sure having some weeks to let it sink in, and (sadly) avoiding watching ATLA has helped too. Although seeing the White Lotus guards hovered around the radio was way too cute. xD
@masterecacob, I didn't notice that about the titles! That is a great change.

Amazing opening episode! Feels good to know that something in this world actually lives up to its hype. Been burned by so many lackluster video games failing to deliver. What I like about TLoK is that its true to the original but doesn't recycle anything. Everything is fresh yet familiar.

I love this show already! The action, the story, the characters. All so perfect. I love the airbending family.
I find the sad music (which plays at the closing theme), so meaningful. Really beautiful.
The technology is reasonable paced, but I had no idea they'd have Radios, Cameras, and michrophones! Another 75 years, they'll have TV's! I wanna see what traditions from the original show, still play importance in this show's society. (Spirits, cultures, etc..).

I loved this episode. Yeah RC is gorgeous and Amon is a badass with the voice of Steve Blum.
I'm loving not just the changes of the technology level of the world and the nature of the Order of the White Lotus but everything in general.
I am definitely loving Korra and Janet Varney's voicing her. Most excellent.
Can't wait to see more from the show.

Not to mention that Amon's Lieutenant is voiced by Lance Henriksen. The casting for this show is really top notch. Then again, so was the casting for ATLA! We're quite the lucky fanbase.

The technology is a little disorienting for me, and while I thought the episode was a little bit too silly at parts, it was a nice introduction to a lot of the problems that would be facing a city of that size and that diverse. I expect that it will delve deeper into these problems (the most pertinent being the ones regarding the anti-bending movement).
Not going to lie though, while I am a little disappointed that the mystery surrounding Zuko's mother wasn't explained, I would have been even more irritated if Katara nonchalantly just laid it on the table for her grandkids.

I loved this episode. Yeah RC is gorgeous and Amon is a badass with the voice of Steve Blum. The bad guy is Orochimaru? Well...plus lots of other guys...but old snakelips is the best known bad guy he's played...

I agree, I was a little upset when I thought they were going to answer one of the biggest questions from ATLA casually in the first couple of minutes. I really hope, they don't just drop the issue though. I just hope that it is presented in a way that doesn't make it seem out of place in the series.

I will always at heart have wished they would have done a concluding season dealing with the aftermath of the war... ;; even just a mini one to answer the mystery of what happened to Ursa, the founding of Republic City, and other things. The war with the Fire Nation didn't just end and everyone agree to get along so easily, you know? But regardless, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this series. I think it has a lot of potential. edit: I think it would be kind of cool if they did a "flashback" episode to let us see what actually happened and not just let us "hear" the story, if that makes sense. I don't know if or where that would fit in the storyline, but I think it would give a nice sense of closure - at least for me - in regards to that storyline, and give it from the perspectives of the old characters.
