Welcome to the forum, and nope, not entirely wrong! But the really interesting thing about the four nations is that they pull influences from a lot of cultures, Asian and otherwise. Like the top-knots that the Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom men wear, that's Japanese and Chinese. And the dress style that Song and her mom wore in that Earth Kingdom village, that's a Korean Hanbok. Sokka's boomerang is Australian, and geography-wise the Fire Nation is based on Iceland. And of course, there's a lot of overall Chinese influences, from culture, history, martial arts, food, and the calligraphy. I know there have been interviews with show creators Mike & Bryan regarding the nations and the influences, although I can't seem to find any now. I thought there was something in the Art Book, but it must be some side-note on one of the pages 'cause I couldn't find it either. But what I do remember from those interviews though, is that Mike & Bryan didn't want to specifically pin it down to one specific country because they wanted to create their own identity while still paying homage, and in the case of the Fire Nation, didn't want to vilify a specific country or race. Or something like that. I'll see if I can track down the interviews. edit: Haven't found it yet, but on Avatar Wiki there is a general but incomplete list of real-world cultural influences for the four nations.

Hm... I'm not sure. From what I can find, most sites just refer to it as a flute. Here is a screenshot from the episode. It looks pretty basic, but not quite like the one Aang played in 'The Library'. Looking on Wiki, the classification seems to be a vertical end-blown flute. There's a lot of ancient cultures from all over the world that use these kind of flutes. Some of them are listed here. Watching The Painted Lady though, it looks like Sokka's flute has four finger holes, which could make it similar to the Danso, a Korean flute, or maybe the Shakuhachi, a Japanese flute. The finger holes on Sokka's flute are near the top though, so maybe not. (Also, welcome to the forum! ^^)
