Some of the people around here felt it, but I didn't feel anything lol. My only concern is if this is something similar to Japan and a big one hits, then is followed by an even larger, especially in these areas where we aren't earthquake proof

Honestly, we're more worried about Irene than any silly earthquake over here in NC. 5.8 is unusual sure, but not in anyway 'dangerous'. That said, no I didn't feel it, but I know a few friends who did.

I felt it here on Long Island, but in all honesty I think everyone is far more worried about Irene now. Yesterday at work (Target) we sold out of D batteries, bottled water and flashlights. I will laugh if this is another Earl.

That said, no I didn't feel it, but I know a few friends who did. lol um... 5.8 is considered a major earthquake, especially for an area where it is uncommon for them to occur. Most of the buildings here aren't structured to be earthquake-proof the way they are in Japan and California for example, and that's why it's more dangerous for an earthquake of any magnitude to occur here than in a region accommodated to it. And as someone who's had to deal with earthquakes, they fo sho aren't silly and can cause a lot of problems. ;( Irene's a big deal, but earthquakes are big deals too. At least with Irene, we know she's coming and can prepare, which is why she seems a more imminent/realistic threat... if a larger earthquake hits again though, who's to say what kind of damage could strike Virginia, and the surrounding areas. But in regards to Irene, I'm far enough in-land for NC to probably only get some showers and maybe some scattered t-storms. I hope there's no repeat of the past summer with the crazy storms there were in May... I don't want my car to get bombarded by tornadoes and hail. D:

Sorry, I didn't mean to say that earthquakes in general were no big deal, and yes, a big one out of no where would indeed be very, very bad for the east coast. However, the random 5.8 only caused light property damage, while Irene has already claimed a dozen lives. Both have the potential to be very bad, but in this case Irene was simply more destructive.
Anyway, that wasn't too bad here either. We got a few inches of rain and a lot of scattered tree limbs, and thankfully we did not lose power, although I know a lot of people nearby did. But hey, we're North Carolina, we're pretty used to that.
Hope Shocky, Night, and all our other forumgoers up north are doing alright!

You East Coast DHers stay safe and to make sure the people you know are safe too! Thinking of y'all!

I've just seen first-hand what an earthquake can do, even in a prepared country, so they freak me out. Of course, Irene definitely did do her fair share of damage. I didn't get any rain at all myself, but I live in the middle of the state, so I imagined that would be the case. Still, my brother lost power and he lives in Raleigh, so I thought that was interesting even though I'm only an hour south of him. :0

hahahah Dan, of course I do. Yikes. Though I do have to say, at least you lost power for a legitimate reason. One evening, I went to the lake then Bojangles with my friends, and there was a small thunder storm - nothing major - but we lost power for a day. I think I lost power this past summer at home 4 times, and one of them was for 3 days. lmao Did you take a cold shower though, Gabi?

The hot water actually lasted until the last day, I was surprised. My stove is gas-powered, too so we could still cook and everything. Just ughhh the fridge/freezer and electricity. It really wasn't that terrible in retrospect.
