It seems like only yesterday we were discussing the "end" of the Avatar series! As new fans and old speculate about the plot of Korra, not many have thought about the future of the fandom. For example:
* When compared to the original, do you expect a bigger or smaller following for the new series?
* Will the "Famous Fans" of A:TLA return for Korra, or will a new crop of writers, fan-artists and cosplayers be inspired by the new series?
* On a personal level, how does your excitement for Korra compare to (for example) a new episode of Avatar back in the day?
* In general, what differences do you expect to see in the fandom?
DISCUSS! Oh, and I hope this thread is on the right board! I guess I'm a little out-of-practice! :]

I highly doubt Korra will receive the same cult following that the original series had.
It's possible. Though most people stopped remaining active in the fandom mainly out of a lack of interest/new content or because of priorities in life.
I'll wait until I see an episode to make a statement about that.
New crowd and a much smaller following, but more active than the past few years obviously.

Part of me expects a bigger, and part of me expects a smaller following. The part of me that expects bigger is hopeful that all of the original fans will return, but the more logical part of me expects a smaller crowd than before. Why? It's just sort of a gut instinct, especially with tv going out like it is. Most people I know now just watch their certain shows online.
Yes. lol I honestly don't know, but I am hopeful that BOTH occur. I am up for new people, but I do miss some of the originals.
Right now, it doesn't compare too much. I AM excited for Korra, but now all of the old characters are going to be gone, from what I understand. So...there is some anticipation, but I don't really wanna hold my breath just yet.
I think that younger people will be in, this time. Not like last time, where there were a lot of teenagers and adults. This is mostly because from what I've seen, Nickelodeon has chased off all of the older fan-base with a lot of children's shows. I don't know anyone who even considers watching anything on that channel any more. So, with that, I expect a lot of early-teens.

After the success of the last series this one might be more anticipated for those who didn't get into the first series. I'm thinking bigger following to stay positive. 3.) My excitement for Korra isn't as strong as Avatar back in the day to be honest. It's just that when the last series came out I still hadn't known what I was going to get. But, now that I'm more knowledgeable about M&B's world this time...some of that excitement has dissipated. Don't get me wrong I'm still psyched for how this series will be different from the one previous but that feeling of something new isn't quite as strong. I'm hoping everything that made Avatar great will be in Korra as well and if it surpasses Avatar that would be the icing on the cake. 4.) For some reason I have it in my head that our discussions/theories won't be as in-depth as last time. That could be do to my thinking this series won't be such a cult favourite but I'm hoping it goes the way of Harry Potter. With the new info gained from this series we can tie up all the threads from last series more to make one giant canon. ;D P.S: I need to learn how to quote properly again

I can't seem to get myself as pumped for Korra as I did for ATLA yet. I'm not sure if that's just because we haven't seen any Korra episodes yet and it'll kick in after a few or because I've (sadly) outgrown it. I can't remember the last time I watched Avatar. But hey, I'm posting this right now (mostly because I am bored out of my mind with nothing to do at work) so there's something keeping me attached to the fandom. If Korra has the same carefree innocence as ATLA, then I'm sure I'll get back into it. But if they try to mature it at all, I have a feeling I might become disenchanted quickly. As for fans, I bet we'll get a new rush of nerdy, young teens to fill the shoes of the fans who have lost some of their childlike enthusiasm as they've neared and passed twenty.

I was 'past my twenties' when the first series came out...didn't make me any less nerdy for it

Of course there are exceptions. The majority of the fans here do join around their early teens though and that's what will keep the fandom going.

@shay, never watch the latter half of Trigun, then. =T
But if my memory of The Old Days hasn't completely failed me, there were quite a number of fans that were in their late teens and older wandering around the fandom, myself included. In fact one of the running jokes was how so many of us didn't fit into the target audience, but loved ATLA anyway. ^^; One of the many great things about the show, actually, was how it attracted people from all over the spectrum.
I do agree though that new blood will be a major part of what revives the fandom, especially if a lot of the fans from before have moved on to new pastures, but I think it is limiting to rest that mostly on young teens. Yeah, their enthusiasm will be more vocal and marketing will most likely be targeted toward them, but they won't be the only ones in this boat. Especially considering how many older fans liked ATLA (which has been acknowledged by Nickelodeon to some extent) and just the shift itself in the show from playful Aang to more mature Korra. It's hard to tell without the actual episodes to see how things will go, but from the previews and the interviews, I think this show is going to hit a wide age spectrum just like ATLA did. Maybe more so, since it has ATLA's success to help boost its advertising/online word-of-mouth, and with the mixed martial arts and BA Korra, will suffer less from the "it's just a kiddie show" hand wave.
As for my excitement for it.... I care when I care, and I don't when I don't. The unknown air date makes things a bit difficult, and with busy times and other shows/movies to fangirl over, it's easy to let Korra slip to the backburner. I'm sure things will pick up when a date is chosen and it actually starts to get close, though that hasn't stopped the flood of Korra fanart on dA. I don't think the fandom will have anything to worry about, lack-of-attendance-wise.

I was in my twenties when the series came out and have followed the fandom discreetly since. No reason why cartoons can't be enjoyed by people of all ages.

I wasn't implying that you were.... Oh, I see. I should have mentioned the rest of my comments were directed to Nymph. Sorry about that. ^^; Unless this isn't directed to me at all, and I am just in desperate need of more coffee.
But for fandom > show, I totally get that. I have a couple of shows/fandoms that are like that too; it's really amazing how some people can completely change the experience for the better. :nods:
