I was thinking of starting a "Creepypasta" type thread because of the direction the Halloween thread took. I got on YouTube to find something to post and I found this video of the "Suicide Mouse". I started to watch it until I read that, supposedly, the video has caused people to commit suicide, then I got too chicken to finish it and started searching for the story on the net. Here's a link to the story, complete with video at the end. www.rickey.org/?p=43827The thing that makes this so unsettling is that, when I tried to confirm that the story is fake, I can't find anything that says, without question, that it is (though some definitely claim that it is). In fact, most comments about it say that it's freaky as heck, and some say the story is true. Truth is, I still haven't watched the entire thing.

YouTube Hearsay: "The truth with this video is that the real full original footage mentioned is just the first three seconds, and that's it. Disney was testing the effects of animation with it, but someone on the 4chan forums apparently wasn't pleased, and edited it into what you see in this clip. So, in short, both the scary story behind it and this clip is a hoax. If you want this comment to stay visible, please give it thumbs up for people to see." I watched the video and apparently it does have some frightening sounds and distortions. While the comment is no measure of veracity, it seems rather justifiable that Disney would have created a quick animation to test certain effects. The rest of the video is some repeated cycle. The article you linked to had some mention of a 7th minute irregularity; I looked at this carefully and noticed that the overall walking cycle of the mouse is still the same, yet its face and head are (for the most part, discounting irregular jolts) still. It could be that the entire layer from the "ground" up (which included a part of the head) was altered to make it appear freakish. The original mouse head was bobbing up and down every so frame. The "Mouse" walking backwards part wasn't strange at all; because of the limited mouse-walk frames of animation presented cyclically, no matter if they're played backwards or forward, the effect will still be the same. I also believe that with the added distortions and noises, it became more frightening to people psychologically as they correlated the strange and unusual/unknown with typical fear symbols. It doesn't help that the article you posted also seems bent on spreading paranoia and fear based on how it communicates its message. All-in-all, it's nothing to worry about. I wasn't induced to suicide and I doubt you'd be either. Besides, wouldn't a psychologically-induced suicide hysteria be investigated and more widespread? The fact that it's still on youtube with at least one video having over 500k views should show that it's not some cursed ring film. You're right about the video. I have watched it and I don't feel any need to off myself. I'm also convinced, as you say, that this video has not induced mass suicide. Actually, I think the description of the video is creepier than the video itself ~ although the screaming is pretty spooky, I think. I saw those forums you linked when I was searching for the story on the web. Shoot, Snopes was the first place I looked. What I find strange is that it almost seems like whether the story is true or not comes down to a matter of opinion. This would be such an easy story to prove definitively false. Leonard Maltin could just come out and say that he's never had an employee or assistant commit suicide, especially not in such a dramatic way. I've search the story in a couple different ways, and I just can't find anything like that. The notion of the spooky lost episode is a pretty common. I've read the story of the "Dead Bart" Simpson's episode and "Squidward's Suicide". I also found this one that's very much like the "suicide mouse" except it's funnier because, apparently, killing yourself is not enough if you watch a video. You need to gouge out your eyes first and send them to the YouTube. ;D I post it here just for the humor. encyclopediadramatica.com/Creepypasta/Mediocre_Creepypasta
