I need to modify my statements on the previous posting.
I went back to my Book 2 DVD which had an interview with Bryke and M Night. The way M Night talked about it, it sounded like he came up with the idea of doing a live action movie by himself. M Night went on to say how agonizing it was to edit the movie because there was so much he wanted to keep in it. In the interview, Bryke seemed to be right in step with M Night... something I find almost unbelievable... but of course, the interview had taken place at the very BEGINNING of making the movie...
So perhaps it was not the drive for profit so much as it was just trying to stuff 10 pounds of junk into a 5 pound bag.

So perhaps it was not the drive for profit so much as it was just trying to stuff 10 pounds of junk into a 5 pound bag. Shyamalan obviously picked the wrong 5 lbs. of scenes to stick into the 10 lb. movie, then. I rewatched it yesterday with my brother, and I picked out so many scenes that could have been cut and replaced with important material. I'm still confused as to why he didn't elongate the movie, either. 94 minutes isn't exactly a huge movie, and it wouldn't have hurt one bit.
