Its kind of pretty ironic that Shymalan would change the pronounciation of the names of the main characters to sound more "asian" considering all the other asian characterisitcs of the show that he's chosen to bleach out in his movie. I couldn't agree more. Their names were already Asian ones. I actually found out that the word Agni from Agni-Kai means Fire Godess in Chinese. Asian. At least Iroh's mispronunciation sounds mildly normal. And with the way things are going, Toph will probably end up as 'TOE-ff'' It just makes me want to Shymalan.

Didn't Night say that he only did it because the actors had a rough time pronouncing them?

He felt the names were mispronounced all along. And does everyone but me have access to avatar smileys?!? EDIT: Oh just figured it out.

"Its kind of pretty ironic that Shymalan would change the pronounciation of the names of the main characters to sound more "asian" considering all the other asian characterisitcs of the show that he's chosen to bleach out in his movie."
It's also really ironic given that, you know, SOKKA IS INUIT.
I'd also had to wonder if he was LITERATE. Clearly, the names are pronounced the same as they're spelled. It would be Soh-ka if there was one "k," but there are two, so it would be pronounced Sock-uh. Same thing with Aang--two "a"s allow it to be pronounced with a long "a." And, Avatar is pronounced the same in every use--from the awful movie to the pixels on the internet. There's no excuse for that one, as well as Iroh.
If he's uncomfortable with the pronunciations that really are fine and the creators' intention, what else will he not feel comfortable with? What else will not be correct to him? (Obviously, casting the Fire Nation as Indian just felt right.)
What other changes will we look forward to seeing?
Fun Side Note: The other day was my friend's birthday, and on the front of the card, I drew Iroh and Sokka - Iroh with big ears ("Ear-oh") and Sokka soaking in a tub ("Soak-uh") to poke some fun.

Here's a clue; Aang would be "Ong" if there was one A. But no, there's two, stretching out the vowel sound.

Yes, I pointed that out. Again, is he literate? Honestly.
If you head over to LastAirbenderFans, they posted a link to an official The Last Airbender quiz. It is mostly common sense--but they reveal some key plot points in M. Night's movie. Turns out, not only is he changing Kyoshi Island--it turns out he's changing Northern Air Temple. An old man (the airbender lookalike in the trailer, I'm guessing) lures Aang to the Northern Air Temple, where he is ambushed by Firebenders (all those battle scenes we've seen since the first trailer is my guess).
And interestingly, he's keeping the explosion. On another forum, they posted the casting list--and it looks like the Fortuneteller is still in it. So, the episode is in it, but Jun isn't.
So, whether this leans toward embarassment or entertainment is up to you.

Im certainly not supporting his decision. I guess he didnt think it was how people from the water tribe would enunciate it. If you think about it, "Sokka" is a very unique case becase the title of "Sokka's Master" gives the roman alphabet spelling of his name. Although the roman alphabet spelling for the other characters are accepted, within the series itself, all the writing is in chinese characters. Its something to bear in mind when considering the roman alphabet spelling of asian or eastern names. It has never been an exact science and often gets muddled. For example Sun Tzu (made famous by the movie "Wall Street") is widely known and pronounced as "sun sue" but as a chinese name should be pronounced "Soon Zuh".

Jun isn't in the script? I thought the creators made it very clear that she cannot be removed.

Again, is he literate? Honestly. All things considered, I'd say no. On another forum, they posted the casting list--and it looks like the Fortuneteller is still in it. So, the episode is in it, but Jun isn't. The thing is, if Mike and Bryan say you can't cut Jun, YOU CAN'T CUT HER. She's very important to the storyline of that episode. However, did the forum say anything about her appearing at a different time? That's a possibility....

Oh, goodness, that's my fault! Sorry about that. I just understood it as she would NOT be in the movie, per somewhere else I read. I think it was all of M Night's other changes--notably removing my main character and others--that made me think she wasn't in it. She's my second favorite character.
And, I absolutely thought she was pertinent, not only in Bato (which is not in it, I'm guessing?) and the Fortuneteller. Also, she returns in Book 3 to track down Aang.
Actually, come to think of it, I believe it was somewhere on this forum that they were discussing her role in the film, and they said she wouldn't be in it. That's where my belief stemmed from. But, I will get around to giving both of you Karma for making my day. Thank you. =]
But, Mike & Bryan make a lot of things clear, but it all gets muddled in M. Night's questionable head. I have not heard anything on Jun in the film (officially), so I won't be holding my breath. Honestly, when it comes down to it, M. Night could justify her expendability in his movie. Unfortunately. =\

Thank you for the karma. Hmm, in reguards to Bato, he isn't as important to the storyline, but I deffiantly have mixed feelings about cutting him. I mean, Shymalan will have to cut a few things, and Bato is one he could get away with. But at the same time, he makes Aang realize how much Sokka and Katara mean to him, and I guess that could pertain to the plot so.... Shymalan really needs to listen less to his empty head and more to Mike and Bryan....
