Some Parents Oppose Obama School Speech Sign in to Recommend comments (728) Sign In to E-Mail Print Reprints ShareClose LinkedinDiggFacebookMixxMySpaceYahoo! BuzzPermalinkBy JAMES C. McKINLEY Jr. and SAM DILLON Published: September 3, 2009 HOUSTON — President Obama’s plan to deliver a speech to public school students on Tuesday has set off a revolt among conservative parents, who have accused the president of trying to indoctrinate their children with socialist ideas and are asking school officials to excuse the children from listening. The uproar over the speech, in which Mr. Obama intends to urge students to work hard and stay in school, has been particularly acute in Texas, where several major school districts, under pressure from parents, have laid plans to let children opt out of lending the president an ear. www.nytimes.com/2009/09/04/us/04school.html?bl&ex=1252296000&en=aca08736a6e52505&ei=5087%0A What in the blue blazes is wrong with these people?

It's ridiculous. I don't understand what's gotten into the parents of today. It seems EVERYTHING can damage their children nowadays, so they must be protected, helmet, pads, and all, from anything the parents don't approve of.
And I'm sorry, but really? Really, parents of America? You all turned out fine. You jumped off diving boards without them being a liability (we had to remove ours at camp), you played pranks, you did all of this total bs fun stuff, and now you're calling it off for your children because maybe one child was hurt.
Yet you can send your kids off to PUBLIC school, run by the GOVERNMENT. If you really cared about protecting your kids from political influence, a private school would've been the better direction.
Anyway, I just think it's ridiculous. Let Obama speak to your kids.
God forbid he says something good.

What sickens me is the ridiculous level these parents are taking partisanship. I bet these parents will boycott turkey this Thanksgiving because of the usual Presidential pardon of a turkey which (for the duration of Obama's Presidency) will now be reviled as some strange socialistic/Kenyan/Muslim tradition.

But it is true. But the previous president had his own share of troubles. his opponents blamed him for all the troubles during his 2 terms, even the weather. Not everything is socialist/muslem. I really would like to know where these folks get their news and information from. Fox News is doing it's job to pollute the air waves, no doubt. Then again, there are a lot of people who find the urge to work hard to be an insult. You know, you are supposed to get evrything you want for free. But frankly, if the parents are that narrow minded, I highly doubt the kids will be very impressed with whatever the President of the United States of America will have to tell them. Bigotry 365 days of the years usually overrides any impulse of the brief nature.

Mmh. Just wait. One of two things is going to happen. First, the adults who are complaining about things like this for the past thirty years will all die and their children will finally realize just how stupid their parents sounded. Or two, these children will grow up to be teenagers, learn of the things their parents did when they were teens themselves, then throw it all back in their faces and rebel something fierce, doing the exact same things. Worst case scenario, however, is that they grow up to be sheeple, just like their parents before them...
But it reminds me of that whole thing with David Letterman and the remarks he made about A-Rod and Sarah Palin's daughter. Somehow or another, some people got it in what little fraction of a colletive brain they have that he was speaking of her 14 year old. I'm sorry, but anyone with half a brain who's honestly been paying attention to world events since March 2008 knows she has more than one daughter and should have been able to figure out just which Palin daughter Letterman was taking a shot at. Not the right discussion, I know, but in a way, it's related.

There seems to be more rumors to this than just this, but it looks like that Mexico and possibly even 2 Asian countries could be having the issue that the socialist movement maybe the way to go, But also there has been rumors that Mexico is willing to take back the land of the southern and entire Pacific coast of the US, which is in part of the movement idea, but I guess the UN could end up stepping in if things get ugly.

Well, Venezuela has turned 'socialist' (looks like a plain ole dictatorship to me)
Mexico - seems like anything that's an actual workable government is an improvement. And while I am sure there are movements to take back the old lands, the UN will be the last to step in...not until the dust has settled. You are talking violating borders of a sovereign country, that is not going to go over well.
Seems the speech is done with. My own son listened to it in school, parents did get the chance to opt out (it's a serious wtf moment. do kids also get the chance to opt out of the Ghettisburg address?) The most memorable part of it seems to be that he urged kids to stay in school and get an education. I fail to see the problem with that message. Unless of course I as a parent plan on working till I die to support the habits of my adult child....living in the basement.

Lets deal with substance instead of catch phrases. We dont need a repeat of the mccarthy era.
Ill be the first to admit that I dont know a great deal about South American history but from what I can tell, it doesnt take much to be a step up which accounts for the popularity of bufoons like Chaves who I predict will end up like Mugabe when the oil dries up or the price of oil takes another dive.

And I think they're still in an uproar because a black man was voted President. Just wait. Somewhere along the line, someone's going to succeed in assassinating Obama, then Joe Biden will be sworn in as President, then alla sudden, these same people will be singing his praises, even though he'll be saying the same things his predecessor was.

While I agree there's a lot of people projecting their own problems with Obama, be he black and/or liberal, I don't think he'll get assassinated. After all, George W. Bush was the most unpopular president in the history of modern polling and that was in the US alone. The worst he got was a dud grenade and a pair of shoes. The Secret Service are exceptionally good at their jobs. And if, heaven forbid, Biden does succeed Obama, I doubt he'll be as popular with the opponents.

There's plenty of people out there who are still calling for the overturning of the election, and they're saying it's because he's black. Maybe he won't be assassinated, and maybe Biden won't be quite as popular, but in such an event, I'm willing to bet the majority of them would change their tunes in a heartbeat.

^^ Remember the sudden spike in gun buying when the election results were announced? There are plenty of nutters out there whod love to take Obama out. Whether its coz he's black or they think he's muslim/socialist/anti-Israel/etc is besides the point.

Well, the second ammendment guarantees the people the right to bare arms. Thar we really don't live in the woods surrounded by hostiles anymore (well, some exceptions may apply) but that's the status. Pretty much with every democratic President we get this.
