*face/palm* >_< Why?!?! I didn't like Jesse McCartney as Zuko but he was still a better choice than Dev Patel. I got nothing against the Dev kid but he shouldn't be Zuko.

This is kind of old news...we've been discussing it in the main thread...and the Jessie Macarthy thread...for quite some time...I don't think it really needs its own thread...

Unlocking. The main thread seems to be discussing something else, and why not have separate thread for major announcements? The main thread will be too cluttered anyways. =/

Thanks Night, I'm quite optimistic about the casting of Dev Patel. It's the only announcement so far that I can really say I like or dislike, and I do like it.
His performance in Slumdog Millionaire makes it clear that he's capable of pulling off a character with Zuko's depth, and Zuko's conflict is something I'm positive he'll be able to execute well, even if he doesn't look exactly like animated incarnation of the character.

THANK GOD. Jesse McCartney would have done a horrible job.
*was unable to get mental image of Zuko singing "Beautiful Soul" out of my head*

You know... I LOVED Dev Patel in "Slumdog Millionaire," but I'm just not sure he's Zuko. He's certainly a great actor (and his martial arts background doesn't hurt, either), but he seems more Sokka-ish to me. Someone on imdb took a picture of Dev and edited it so that he had blue eyes. He even LOOKS like Sokka.
And his casting actually creates a few more problems in this whole race controversy: 1) We're now dealing with token-ism... the casting directors seem to have thrown in a "token Asian" for the sake of keeping angry fans at bay, and
2) We have lily-white protaganists battling a dark-skinned villain. Considering the fact that there's already been a lot of controversy of the white-washing of the cast, I don't imagine it'll go over well.

But remember...that dark-skinned villain will become an ally...but still...it doesn't send a good message does it...

fans are fickled about little stuff like skin color. I just want this staff and crew, and cast to be able to perform at their best to bring it to the big screen.
Now as far as Dev goes. I believe he is better suited for Zuko. An all white cast battling a dark skinned villain wouldn't offend as many people as you'd think. I'm probably the only one going to go see this movie based on the fact that it's Avatar! I'm really toning down all the pre-release judgment because there is a good chance the movie will turn out well.
