There really are no rules in warfare if you think about it. I mean, you could keep POWs to seem less cruel or you could slaughter them off.
I believe the Geneva conference (the one that set the guidelines for war right?) set the general standards of what is moral and what is not moral during war but it's kind of contradictory isn't it? War is killing and this only justifies that killing during war is completely moral.
I mean sure, you'll defend your life and those of your buddies, but what happens when you're occupying or seizing an area? Civilians might be a problem if they're closely tied with rebels and soldiers of the opposition.
People cheat and kill to make sure no opposition arises, because even if you win a game, you still have a problem.

The Geneva Convention is just a formal documentation in case aliens come and we have to explain to them our procedures for conflict in case they want to fight us. They really dont have to know that we dont follow our own rules (who does?) I actually do believe that. Because seriously what were they thinking when they made that? Nobody at that convention had to of been in war before and if they had they probably didnt even get a say in it. "Prisoners shall not be tortured..." "Wait seriously?! Seriously?!" "Calm down Sargent, rules are rules. If we play by them, the others will follow suit eventually." It's like trying to contain energy and telling it how to behave. It's so far beyond conceivable.
