I really don't know how to blend at all.
I love to get the smart peeps talking here about their Photoshop methods, so I can leeeeeearn.
One thing I would suggest if you're going to go simplistic and only use colors, no textures or text is to take your own screenshots. Not to cut on firebender and ASN or anybody else, but they simply can't read your mind and take the EXACT screen you want. I've been doing my own screens for Naruto, and as far as I can tell, they've been my best so far. And it gives you an excuse to watch your favorite shows again...
Pianst: Thanks for the advice, it made me feel like a Photoshop newb again! (That's a good thing, though.)
Pera: That's IT! I use text on almost everything, and it's making them suck! "Text- use sparingly" is like, the step from beginner to intermediate. (And I feel like a n00b now, as opposed to a newb.) Thank you!
Uh, what's the feathered selection tool? And what is the point of masks, I never really understood them.
Ugh. N00b alert.

My versions ran out...... You've used every single version of Photoshop you could possibly get a trial version for? I've used CS2; CS and I'm on Elements 2.0 right now. My parents are thinking of getting me Elements 5.0 ($60-90) for Christmas though; so that's pretty cool. ;D Well......no. Only CS2. I just downloaded Illustrator trial though.

@zink: The feather tool looks like a rectangle with dashed lines. It's on the top left of the tool menu thing in CS2.

OMGAH....a photoshop thread! I could spend forever talking here. Anywho, everyone is talking about blending, so umm...I use the almighty ERASER tool! YAYZ! Like.. To blend images with the eraser tool, do you just have the images overlapping each other and erase the parts you don't want? Also, I absolutley LOVE the high pass filter. When combined with different colors and such, I can make stuff like: Does anybody have a tutorial on how to do this kind of icon? I love that style. ^ The Marquee Tool? The thing that selects stuff? Yeah, you overlap the images and then use that to select parts you don't want and hit the delete key. You can keep on doing that until you think it looks good.

@zink: That's what I like about this thread too; there's so much I can learn from the Photoshop pros. XD
I try to only use text when it looks good; though I do have the problem of always trying to put some text into my icons. I'm going to try and stop that habit now. XD
And I agree with you on the screenshots thing; that's why I downloaded my screenshot program so I can take my own screenshots of Avatar; they're much better quality than the firebender.com or avatarspirit.net screenshots; and I don't have to worry about the stupid nick bubble or the blast avatarspirit.net logo. -_-
@gigi: I'd download different trial versions of Photoshop if your really like it that much; it's totally worth it. ;D
@alpacas: For your first question, I believe that's correct; you have to overlap the images and erase the parts you don't want. I used to use that method; but once I found out about the feathered marquee tool thing; I instantly loved that tool better and have used it ever since.
Though I may try to eraser tool once or twice now and then, because Night's sigs are PWNsome and she apparently uses the eraser tool. XD
And for your second question; I don't know; I'd like to know how to do that too. ;D

@cat: What program did you download? Also, could you take screenshots from the youtube versions? Guess I posted this thread in the wrong board, cause a lot of people didn't see it. <_> Ahem.*clears throat* Any person wanting to take screenshots of your favorite programs, Avatar or any other program, or even just random stuff on your computer; see this thread:distanthorizons.proboards31.com/index.cgi?board=otherc&action=display&thread=1165361546And yes, you WOULD be able to take pictures of youtube; because it takes pictures of your computer screen; meaning you can take pictures of anything on your computer screen you want; like if you put a DVD in and didn't have it full screen on; you could take screenshots of that movie. (That's what I'm planning to do with A Tale of Two Cities XD)

I just use the lovely "Print Screen/SysRq" button. I can't wait to cap "Dead Man's Chest" I'm going to over the weekend, and hopefully apply some of these techinques. @cat: I still don't know how you "feather" the marquee. When I delete stuff with the marquee, it just deletes in a hard line, not a feather. High pass filter... to do those kinda icons before, I've just selected and copied. Cythia did a tutorial on HybridGenesis here.

@zink: Thanks for the tutorial; I'm sure to try it out some time. ^_^ And capping a movie or T.V. show is the best, isn't it? XD And to get it not to do it in a straight line; make sure the box where it says how many pixels the feather is, is at 10 not 0. XD You can adjust it, but generally, the smaller the number, the more square the blending, the larger the number, the smoother and more circular the blending. I use 10, but as I said, you can adjust it to your needs.

^ OH! Omigosh, I just now got what you meant! You go to select-->feather! I thought it was a tool you could pick up from the palette! Okay then... whew.
I love capping... I wouldn't want to cap for others though, so FBC and ASN still have my greatest respect.

Sorry, this is what I meant: Change that number, and you can blend images together when you overlap them. (It's also very helpful to add shading to an icon when you don't want to mess with the color and style of the text; as shown here: From this: to this: to this: The white underneath the text was made with the feathering tool and having the background color be white.)
